  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Cigar cutters are allowed per TSA. I fly with a Palio and a Xikar V Cutter all the time. At least 12 flights in the past month, with 0 issues. Always carried on in my laptop bag. If you leave the country, they might not be as big of a fan of it. I did have one Caribbean country that made me check the cutter.

I get stopped occasionally (1 in 30 flights), they just look at it. I've traveled with Xikar Xi, Palió, MTX, Wolf V, Xikar XV, traditional guillotine.

Soft flame lighters, also allowed, just be prepared to be stopped every time through TSA.

nah, just luck of the draw. I always travel with a metal butane lighter in my carry-on, usually a cheap Ronson, and have never been asked about it.

Cutter and matches a-ok for domestic travel... Including carry on. I fly multiple times per week. Usually have two cutters carry on minimum. Never stopped.

I had no problems flying overseas with 3 cutters in my carryon. all were cheap plastic ones though. I didin't want to risk it with my Xikar.

Your cutters will be fine. I've never had them confiscated. I always take my Xikar and a Wolff V-cutter.

Regarding the lighters: if it's got a torch flame and the TSA scanner's observant, they'll get taken. I had my Ronson taken in DEN earlier this year. They did give me the option of mailing it home, but it probably would have cost more than the lighter itself. A gamble I lost, I guess. I've never had a torch lighter taken out of a checked bag, however.

Regards,
Randy

You should still be careful with torches in checked bags. Torches are supposed to travel in an approved case, and should be empty of butane.

Like others have said, never had a problem with carrying a cutter on me while flying.

I did have a TSA agent try to confiscate a soft flame before....he said it must be a torch because he's never seen one like it before. It was a Corona black matte pipe lighter.

Was it on your person, or in your carry on baggage? I haven't flown out of Denver in a while, and not since daily carry of my Xikar Xi2, or EX lighter. So I haven't had the joy of extra handling by TSA.

It was in my carry-on baggage with my travel humidor and cutter. I used to carry a Colibri firebird(?) that was predominantly plastic and just throw it in my pocket, but that one stopped working years ago.

A few years ago I was taken aside by TSA after they x-rayed my bag. The guy said that they saw something "potentially suspicious". As he went through my stuff, I explained what the (metal) cigar cutter was and he said that was not a problem.

The potentially suspicious item turned out to be my calculator: the xray image of the circuitry looked like a possible bomb to them!

I got through just fine, but I DID get searched going to Vegas. Funny thing, both carry on bags had opened alcohol and no one batted an eyelash. Had I known, I'd have had free drinks on the plane.

I can tell you that if you plan on going to Nicaragua you will want to make sure you have a cutter that will not come apart. One of the people in our group was stopped as he had a Palio in his pocket and the security person tried VERY hard to pull that thing apart, but it stood up to mulitple attempts to rip it apart. That is basically all they care about, is if you can pull it apart and use it for a weapon with a blade.
