  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Diving head first into the pipe.

Alright, I put a small order in at pipes and tobacco. Nothing special, a cob and a couple ounces of aromatics and a small tin of frog Morton original.

Not sure if I'll like aromatics but I know I enjoy the smell of the pipe back at a B&M near me.

I know most are going to bring up the newb pipe trade. I want to make sure I like this new venture before trading and possibly wasting someone's beloved baccy because Imay not enjoy the pipe (possibly).

Excited for this new venture and i hope my cigars don't end up getting jealous.

Give it a try and some patience. Your first few times will mean a lot of relights. Packing is a art that is only picked up through practice and frustration. Don't give up on it if it doesn't go great the first few tries.

It still makes me feel a bit awkward having a pipe in my mouth or on me at my age. I have a few family members that enjoyed a pipe but it was mostly a conversation piece. Still they were all much older and just it fit them. Some of the flavors are good though. I suppose in the end it's just a matter of perception. What is normal to others doesn't appear the norm to some and same goes for what fits.

Pipes look really aesthetic and antique though, they've got great history in their design. I love them for that.

I smoke cigars and pipes and started with pipes 13 years ago. For most of that time I smoked a cigar from time to time, but I never got sold on cigars, never smoked that one cigar that claimed me for one of its fanciers. But in 2010 I smoked a Joya de Nicaragua Antano that rang my bells and have been smoking cigars since, yesterday a Don Pepin Original that was so very good.

Pipes are, I think, the most elegant and challenging of all smoking experiences. There is something about the ritual of prepping the tobacco, loading it, and then the succession of lights required to get the bowl burning well that calms me. Beyond taking measured puffs on the cigar and snorking, I don't know much else about cigar technique; pipes on the other hand, require slow smoking, to me the most elusive of pipe smoking requirements. I've had success in slowing down, but not continuously, and if I'm not concentrating on the pipe, I don't smoke slowly.

Enjoy the pipe; it's a very different world!

Mike said it well. I started piping a while ago and I still will not claim I got it down. It is an art form in itself. However I can claim that it is just as slippery a slope as cigars. 12 quart mason jars full and a plethora of tins later....sigh...yeah

I started with frogmorton, not my cup of tea. Going to try some aromatics and Virginia. I really enjoy the rituals and tinkering. It's definitely something I'm going to stick with.

Frogmorton was used for my first attempt, too. It failed me miserably. Another botl sent me a good pipe and a ten bag sampler, mostly virginias, and I liked them a lot better.

Didn't help that my first run at pipes gave me tongue bite. I really had to focus the next go'round, but it got so much better.

If you start to feel tongue bite, put the pipe down and walk away. If you get bit bad I recommend Biotene mouthwash.

(I'm brand new to cigars, but I've been smoking pipes for 13 years.)

Iv gotten slight tongue bite the last 2 times but it was nothing more than the uncomfortable feeling of drinking coffee too hot. Thanks.

I had smoked a pipe about 30 years ago and really enjoyed it but started with cigars and left my pipe...now here I am again with a pipe and loving it but this time I won't stop with my cigars.
