  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Oops - the thread title should be DIY Ozone CHAMBER

---------------------------------------

Okay, so after I get my buffer (getting the 6" workbench model from Harbor Freight), I was thinking about building an ozone chamber. Final step of the restoration would be to put the pipe into the chamber for 6-8 hours to remove any lingering smells/aroma - either from the ghosts that the salt treatment didn't get or from the wax and cleaners that were used during the restoration process.

I am going to get a cooler or old Tupperware container (something that seals) and a small ozone generator that will sit inside. I've found 2 or 3 models that will perform as I need and they're around the $80 mark.

But I have a question for some of the more technically-minded brothers (and sisters) here: If the cooler is air-tight, I wouldn't have to worry about over-pressurization in the cooler, right? The generator will convert oxygen to ozone while running but, since the environment is sealed, it can't produce a higher output of volume than it can take in, right?

The other question is what happens if it converts all the oxygen in the cooler to ozone but that's something I am still researching.

Thoughts on question number one?

Thanks

Now I'm curious how this will work out for you.
I'll let you know. I filled out the "Contact Us" form on the site of one of the manufacturers to ask if there device would work in a sealed environment and they said it would.

I am skipping buying the buffer because I have a really good variable speed drill that can lock into different speeds (including a slow speed) so I bought a $10 buffer wheel kit with three cotton wheels and will just clamp my drill to the workbench for now.

I have to wait to build my funds up a bit, but the ozone generator is the next thing on my list. I'll post pics of it when I am done along with a review of how well it works.

Go to walkerbriarworks.com and click on ozone on the left hand tab. They also have a pdf posted of 15 pages on the matter. Good info

That's where I got the idea, actually. But the chamber they show is several thousand dollars. I'd love to own because I'm crazy that way but it won't happen.

So I had the idea to rig one myself but there's not a lot of information about whether it should be completely sealed or not, etc.

I'm going to reread that PDF. Thanks for reminding me about it.

In some cases, some gases will be higher volume due to molecule-molecule interactions being a lot different. I wouldn't worry about the difference between ozone and oxygen. Also, if its in a cooler, its not 100% air tight so pressure won't build.

The other question is what happens if it converts all the oxygen in the cooler to ozone but that's something I am still researching.
Even if you do, that's fine. Just don't stick your head in the cooler XD

Do it! Here is a link to a build your own for cheap. I made this one for a science experiment and it worked pretty well.

Thanks - that's what I was thinking. Plus, it would only be running for 6-8 hours at any given time.

Well, dammit. Now that you've told me not to, you know I am going to have to try it at least once!

Better make 3or4... Ozone is such a strong oxidizer, that in a cooler. It's going to eat the shit out of itself. Literally. The retail unit I bought destroyed itself in under two years in my lounge. The AC connector was shot in 6 months. But with some regular cleaning I almost made it to two years.
