  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Do you have a vitola/size that you naturally gravitate to?

When I started off I was all about the Churchill's and then the robustos.. I still like smoking a churchill or a robusto from time to time but prefer smoking a lancero, corona gorda or a lonsdale... though I do have a fetish for odd sizes/shapes if I see something odd I usually gravitate towards it.

My fav vitola has to be perfectos I love the flavor change due to the burn. However since most perfectos take a while to smoke I tend to smoke skinnier guys like PCs and lances. However I have some serious fatties in my humidor too. It all depends on when I want a big fat head between my lips.:wtf:

Funny how when (most) start smoking, you go after the thickest, darkest stick you can find..
Yep that was me...spot on. I was all over the Gurkha Ancient Warrior, CAO Bazilia Gol, and RP Vintage 60s. Now I'm all about a natural wrapper lancero.

Everything else being equal, I will usually reach for a torpedo/belicoso. I really like big cigars, like double coronas and presidents, but over the past year I have been smoking figurados. I think the main reason is that I can clip the head at a 45 degree angle (Dickman cut), which makes for a cooler, less irritating smoke by letting me direct the flow away from my tongue.

When you are trying a line that you've not tried before, do you have a particular size that you naturally gravitate to?

For instance, I am not overly inclined to try a lancero unless someone specifically tells me..."you gotta try the lancero." I would typically pick up either a robusto or a belicoso/torpedo.

How about you?

I naturally like petit corona or tre petite corona size sticks as I smoke in the car for about 45-50 minutes commuting to work....

However, your question is asking what would I try in a new line. I would usually try a stick if a lot of folks like a particular size over another or try a few sizes. If not, I would try a PC or Robusto since that is what I mostly smoke. I also look up the line rating on various sites to see what others think about one size over another.

When evaluating a manufacturer, I go for the robusto for a few of reasons. 1. For the purpose of "apples to apples" equity, because about everybody makes a robusto, but not everybody carries a line of semi-coronas (that's what I call them, because no real man will smoke something called "petite.") 2. I may be wrong, but have the feeling that when a manufacturer starts a line, they begin the design with a robusto in mind and branch out from there. So, I want to smoke their "flagship." 3. A 48-52 ring gauge allows me to more easily and effectively use a technique I call "abstraction." Whereby during the final 2 inches of evaluation of an unfamiliar cigar, I can smoke only the filler, to get and idea of its quality alone; and then subsequently abstract the aromas of just the binder/wrapper to evaluate those separately. I do not use that technique when just enjoying a familiar cigar because of the amount of attention to technique involved, but make a point of using it for evaluation purposes and a smaller ring makes it too difficult.

I'm secure enough to say that I smoke petite coronas, or whatever else they want to attach the name to. So fool yourself all you want with the "semi corona" name you're smoking petite corona or petite lancero. :tongueout

i always tend to gravitate toward a dc or toro size. that's more my go to size so that's easier for me to compare. each brand has some great sticks in other sizes, but i usually have to hear it from someone who has tried them before i'll shell my bucks out.

I'm just not that particular, excpet for what fits in my mouth nicely. rarely larger than a 50 ring unless it's a Beli or Torp profile. Other than that anything I can smoke in the time I've got to enjoy it. Different profiles taste different, so when I find a blend I like I like to try many vitolas to compair the experiences.
