my best recommendation is to smoke what you've got right now... most starter packs come with a pretty diverse set of blends... and just take note of which ones you like, which ones you dont care for, etc..
pipes are much like cigars.. everyones tastes are different..
I would focus on making sure you pack, light, and tamp your pipe properly while youre getting started with the hobby.. tongue bite, relights, most other "problems" that frustrate pipe smokers.. all stem from packing/tamping/lighting problems.. once you get that down, you will be able to enjoy the actual tobacco more, and spend more time focusing on what your likes and dislikes are..
some people love aeromatics.. some stick to straight virginias and english.. some like flake.. some like ribbon.. etc..etc.. your options are diverse.. much like cigars.....
While I've got cigars mostly figured out in terms of what I like, dont, etc.. I still try "new" stuff all the time... even if it doesnt fit my profile... every now and then I end up absolutely hating something and tell myself I should have known better.. but occasionally I find something completely outside of my profile that I really dig... and remind myself thats why I keep trying new things..
Pipes are different for me.. I pretty much like it all... I just enjoy some blends better than others.. there have only been a couple of blends that I have zero interest in ever smoking again...
Pipe tobacco, like cigars, have varying degrees of vitamin N, some have mild flavor profiles, some will kick you in the teeth, etc...
Its all about trial and error..
Once you get past your starter kit.. I think a good way to go about things is to stick with a couple of well known brands (Davidoff, Dunhill, Mac B, etc...)... and get a couple of things at totally opposite ends of the spectrum.. like maybe a tin of nightcap and a tin of early morning.. and see what you think...
