I was doing some research and was amazed at how much domain registration costs vary.

Register.com & godaddy.com were both around $12 (w/ private registration option).

1and1.com is $5.99 and this includes "private" registration included. Plus the amount of monthly storage is 1gb vs 25-50mb on reg and godaddy.

It's crazy...they all are doing the same thing but I guess it depends on how much you spend on advertising. :scratchhe

Yea, I don't know much about it but have seen such differences in price. I always assumed there were differences that I could not see.

I don't mind so much if you guys put affiliate program links in your signatures (hey, who doesn't want to make money?), but disguised in it's own thread without disclaimer, is a little too much.

Feel free to toast the thread, I was just pointing out the differences really. :pokemyeye

I signed up with 1and1 when they had free hosting for life but I forgot the login or something and I have free hosting anyway. Well now I work for a hosting company so I can set up a server if I needed.

I also thing 1and1 doesn't let you use their registration if you host it elsewhere (not sure on this)

If you register a domain with someone, you don't have to host as website with them do you? (I don't think so but thought I would ask).

Not generally, but some hosting companies hold your domain "hostage". 1and1 is IIRC, one of those companies. I have no personal experience with them but if you search them on webhostingtalk.com, you get a pretty good idea. :hanghead:

So to host somewhere else, they have to "release" the domain to the hosting company?

Godaddy lets you edit the DNS settings so you can point the domain to any IP you want. I think 1and1 keeps control of that, and it might be in their contract when you sign up for the domain (otherwise it would sound pretty illegal)

Godaddy is usually the best when it comes to this stuff. They let you host anywhere, at least a while ago they did.
