  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hey guys,

I'm all for trial and error with new tobaccos but this year I have spend an inordinate amount on things that I haven't enjoyed in the slightest.

My all time favourite every day smoke is Dunhill Early Morning, I also love Peter Stokkebye Virginia in No. 2 place.

I believe they share similar characteristics and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a tobacco I might enjoy based on these.

I think really they are fairly plain medium bodied smokes. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

EMP is a standard in that it has been around forever; it will be hard to find something comparative as is such a subjective notion. It is one of my absolute favorites. SPC Potlatch is a great medium english that is complex in the description, but easy on the burn. I feel like Frog Morton is in the similar category as well. Have you tried Balkan Sasieni? It's a bit oriental forward, but still has the latakia and VA that you seem to like.

Let us know what you didn't like as well. It's very helpful. I'll start.

Loved the aroma from Drew Estate Meat Pie but it's one of the few pipe tobaccos I did not like to smoke at all. It has a strange bitter metallic aftertaste which I don't care for. And it's the type I like, too, a meaty smoky English blend. Oh well.

I haven't yet liked any of the C&D blends, which was a surprise as reading the descriptions there were quite a few i had high hopes for. I haven't tried them all so wont comdemn them, but the ones i did try were just too fecking strong.

I have enjoyed alot of flakes, plugs and coins, 3 nuns was reasonably good, escudo is lovely, 3p's is my go to when im drinking, gaslight plug is also great. Wasnt the biggest fan of PS Navy flake but only cos there are others i much prefer it's definitely a reasonable smoke.

I like some English Blends, Potlatch was outstanding, Peter Stokkebye English Oriental Supreme was nice, but then I wasnt a fan on PS Proper English. Had high hopes for Esoterica Margate, but It was just ok. I will smoke it but it didnt blow me away.

In terms of Aro's PS Luxury Navy Flake was really nice, didnt mind Sutliff Molto Dolce but I have to be in the mood for that one. Saying that there are a dozen or so other aros i flat out hated, getting harder for me to spend on aros given my strike rate.

Hope that helps @Shlippy

I'm a total Dunhill whore. I suggest you make a tour through their catalog. Nightcap is my go to smoke. I think anyone starting pipes should consider the Big Three (Nightcap, EMP and MM 965) as required reading. If you like EMP try Durbar, Apertif and Standard Mixture as well. I would complain never if all I ever smoked was Dunhill tobaccos.

Wow you weren't kidding you have tried a lot of tobaccos. Thanks for posting about the ones you didn't care for. Many guys here don't like to be "negative" but if everybody always likes everything they smoke it's not helpful at all for those of us who are looking for info on unsmoked blends.

If you like EMP I'm guessing you'd dig Robert McConnell's Original Oriental. That is some refined-ass shit.

I'm a dunhill whore that unfortunately has never smoked dunhill pipe tobacco. I've had the fortune to puff on a few vintage dunhill cuban cigars, and I'm a fan of their mens goods (have a cigar case, brief case, wallet, key wallet and travel garment bag) all dunhill.
I guess I need to get me a dunhill pipe and try out some of these.

I thought it was called royal yuck? Guess I had that wrong all these years :)
Hahaha not a fan hey Cap? That's what's amazing about pipes. With cigars if someone who's in the know says it's great from my experience it has been! But with pipes it's so vast and varied... Such differences of opinion that it needs to come back to trial an error..

If someone says to me "That is a dog rocket don't waste your time" I believe them, but I second guess pipe baccy opinions! It's a mystery! Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Yep, pipe tobacco seems to be a very different beast. I haven't had royal yacht in probably 10 years so who knows what I'd think of it now. But I do still enjoy the same tobaccos from back then.

As with all things tobacco, smoke what you like, like what you smoke!

May your back be to the wind and your match stay lit.
