End of Free Swag?

I understand that, and I think the marketing portion of the bill will be challenged in court. And it certainly DOES tell us what we shouldn't smoke, just like the FDA tells us we shouldn't drink poison, or that our meat packing industries don't cut their product with rat meat, that our food is SAFE to eat. Not that smoking is safe, but have you actually seen how cigarettes are treated before they goes into a pack?

Sure, the FDA has screwed up in the past, and there is suggestion of possible collusion with Big Pharm, but to even suggest getting rid of the only safeguard we have is ludicrous.

No one suggested getting rid of the FDA, They are just doing a lousy job as of late and to add something for them to watch which they should not will not help the situation. The FDA should be making sure that the food we eat and the drugs we use are safe. They should not be regulating tobacco. There is the government entity called ATF. Of course we could get into the argument that the federal government has no right to control tobacco through the enumerated clauses and 10th amendment but I digress...

The ATF is for taxation....and like I said, you should review the toxins that are deliberately added to cigarettes. And even cigars! Maybe the FDA could make cigar manufacturers quit the practice of using fake and dyed maduro wrappers. :grin:

Perhaps, but others have noted that the fact that Philip Morris supports (and wrote?) this law means that this is more about preserving Philip Morris's market share than anything else:

Let's be honest, this law is aimed at ending the promotion of cigarettes towards kids, and regulating the chemicals that tobacco companies deliberately put in their cigarettes.

im fine with them protecting kids. no problem with that. and if i don't get a free bumper sticker with my 5'er in the mail... no big deal.

I also strongly support the regulation of what goes into cigarrettes... i think it will help us as a society (in the form of lower long term healthcare costs) if the millions of smokers out there aren't unknowingly inhaling toxic chemicals.

but for F***'s sake dont punish the cigar industry for the cigarrette industries shameless practices... that's all I ask. I hate it that whenever they hike the taxes on cigarrettes or pass any other form of legislation they lump every other tobacco product in with it including cigars. Cigars and cigarrettes are completely different industries!! name one 12 year old who went out and bought a cohiba because it was cool

What right do we or the government have to tell us what we can and cannot smoke/eat/drink. Illegal drugs are one thing because they pose a risk to those around them but cigarrettes only pose a risk to those smoking it (I know 2nd hand smoke is a concern to some but that is for another discussion). As a individual responsible for themselves they have a right to put the crap thats in a cigarette into thier body if they want. I don't know any cigarette smoker that doesn't know about the bad stuff that is in them. They know this and still smoke them. The only regulation needed is whether that person wants to put that into thier bodies or not. As for kids it is the parents responsibility not mine, yours, or the government. This is the problem today people want the government to control everything and the more they take/we give away the more freedoms we lose.

^^^ well i don't think in this case its such a slippery slope. yes i believe the govt should stay out of our lives but some common sense is in order.

the things that big tobacco puts in their cigarrettes is just absolutely despicable. its just plain wrong.

i wish the world was simple. i really do. but its not. i wish i could tell big brother to stay out of my life but quite frankly in some cases we need big brother to put the smackdown.
