Having formerly lived in the Evergreen State known for its tree huggin, latte sippin, gortex wearing laid back style, I am really taken aback by this.

http://blog.thenewstribune.com/business/2010/12/02/court-issues-el-gaucho-vip-cigar-lounge-a-permanent-ban-on-smoking/

In an economy rife with SBA's closing their doors due to the housing industry issues, they go and run this SBA off.

When does it end?
Some of the comments in that article say it's for the workers. Yeah, right. I've never been to a cigar shop (a real one, that is, not some discount cigarette place with a few boxes of Macanudos) where the employees don't smoke cigars. Who the hell are they protecting?

I'll add that it does make sense to prohibit smoking in an ordinary workplace. There's no reason my co-workers should be forced to put up with my smoke. (Though it's amusing to watch old films of my workplace: everybody seemed to be puffing away on a pipe.) But nobody is forced to be in a cigar lounge, not even the employees -- since the vast majority of workplaces are smoke-free -- so this law is absolutely ridiculous.

all the folks at Grants here in San Francisco smoke cigars and/or pipes. All four of them I should say. and the owner of TObacco Road in Oakland smokes cigarillos. And just about every smoking lounge geared towards US is geared in our favor. THe places that cater to smokers however, not so much. It's retarded.

El Gaucho is a very high end premium steak house that has cigar lounges. I lived across the street from the downtown Seattle El Gaucho when this smoking ban was passed in 05. The Seattle El Gaucho kept their cigar lounge open after the law was passed and paid a daily fine to do so. It finally took a court injunction like this one in Tacoma to end it. It was pretty awesome they kept it open for their clientele and took on the county as long as they could.
As a side note this law forced me to move to Portland, OR where you can smoke in cigar lounges.

As a Seattle, or just outside of Seattle, resident.... I can tell you that Washington smoking laws are total shit. The only place I can buy and smoke a cigar is on Indian (feathers not dots) land. But there is even exceptions to that. Me and my old lady stopped at an Indian casino on my birthday last year. The only reason I wanted to stop was I saw the sign that said "Walk In Humidor". It was a joke of a humidor, but most are in this state. I didnt see anything I wanted, but my girl was insistent.... "I want to buy you a cigar on your birthday" she says. This was a terrible humi, but they had A box of LFD, I love LFD, and was suprised.

Amongst the Macanudos and Partagas, a field filled with Cohiba Red Dots and Montecristo Whites, Onyx and Playboy, I found a box of LFD. It was my birthday so I thought it might be a mirrage. Luckily, It was not.

My girlfriend bought me a cigar, an LFD Reserva Especial, I am actually holding it right now, and will smoke it soon.

Back to the terrible Washington laws.

She bought me this cigar in the casino. We werent there to gamble, but I like to check out every casino I am in. I wanted to walk around and check the place out.

As we walked into the "gaming" area of the casino (really, the gaming area) we were stopped.

"Let me see some ID"

ok, no problem

Then the guard looks at me and smiles. "You know you cant smoke that in here, right"

So to summarize, I bought a cigar in the casino, walked about twenty feet, and was told I couldnt smoke it.

That is a basic explanation of the stupid laws we live with in Washington.

Living here in California it is only a matter of time. As the County of Santa Clara is coming down hard on smoking and should they win, coupled with what has happen in Southern California, and SF, it will only be a matter of time before those of us in Northern California will be forced to smoke in a chimney.

In fact, in Lodi (the other wine country besides Napa) they have ordinances which prevent people from smoking in their own front yards.

Got this from Donna Brown, owner of Mission Pipe in San Jose:

Date: November 19, 2010
To: Our Valued Customers
From: Donna Brown, Mission Pipe Shop
Andrew Reddy, Club Havana Premium Cigars
Flip & Debbie Morton, Smokers Paradise
Bill Davis, West Coast Cigars
Subject: RALLY TO PROTECT OUR RIGHTS
When: Monday, November 22, 2010
2 PM to 7 PM
Location: Mission Pipe Shop
1205 The Alameda
San Jose, California 95126

We are calling upon you to attend an educational rally on Monday, November
22 to learn about the new Ordinances that have been passed and are being
considered by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and the San Jose
City Council.

Next week - Tuesday, November 23, 2010 - despite these tough economic times,
the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will be adopting a new ordinance
that will impact your rights to purchase tobacco products and where you can
or cannot smoke them. In fact, they are preparing a new licensing law that
will drive many small businesses out of business and dictate what can and
cannot be sold in a retail tobacco store such as ours.

If you enjoy your pipe tobacco or any cigar containing any flavorings you
should be aware that the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is prepared
to ban them from sale in any tobacco store in the unincorporated portions of
Santa Clara.

The City of San Jose is planning to create a new licensing program for all
retail stores that sell tobacco products that will negatively impact many
small businesses. In addition, the City of San Jose is planning to enforce
new merchandising schemes that will cause undue hardships on all retailers.

Please plan on attending our educational rally. We will have petitions for
you to sign and form letters for you to use in communicating with our
elected officials. This is even more important than a cigar tasting, so
please join us at your convenience during the hours of 2 PM to 7 PM this
coming Monday, November 22, 2010.

We will be giving out special shirts to the first 300 people who visit
Mission Pipe Shop on Monday.

We urge you to engage with us against the new ordinances that will certainly
test your endurance and civil liberties and attend the scheduled Santa Clara
County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, November 23rd to voice your
objection to more government interference in our businesses and your right
to smoke.
