Evolution of my first ceramic estate (Piv Heavy)

I have been eyeing clay and ceramic pipes for a while now. I picked up this GOEDEWAAGEN BARONITE double walled ceramic pipe on ebay. Here are some of the pics from the auction.











The original material that worked as the tenon to the shank appeared to be cork and had disintegrated. A trip to ACE and $0.37 later, here is the fix.





















The first bowl, Ashton Flake Medallions. She's not a bad smoker either.

Doesn't that smoke really wet? I'd imagine a nonporous bowl wouldn't be the greatest. But I dont know much about piping, just from experience I smoke cobs almost exclusively for that reason.

Yes and no. It's a double walled pipe, so the moisture gathers in the chamber below the bowl. If you smoked it with the bowl higher than the bit then I'm sure some would drain into the stem, but I have not had this problem yet (have only smoked 2 bowls through it so far).

FYI, the inside chamber (below the bowl) is not glazed so some of the moisture is absorbed. These pipes also color when smoked similar to a meer. Since mine is a used pipe it already has a bit of color.

That is some fantastic restoration work! I would think that bowl material would become very hot, but with the double wall I could be very wrong. Good on you for bringing it back and for being brave enough to smoke it. I am far too clumsy to have pipes like that personally.

The bowl of the pipe does get warm, but not too hot to hold. I would make a guess that it gets a bit warmer than my meer.

Here is a tip I learned when restored calabash pipes. Use nipple cream to condition the cork. It's suppose to keep it from degrading. It can be found at the drug store.
