  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Found my grand fathers old pipes. These ones I want to restore and smoke out of to pay homage to an old cowboy born in 1907. He was a Texas ranger who was there when Bonnie and Clyde were shot. A rancher, a bull rider he had his face stepped on 3 times by a bull, he had five sons 1 he had to bury and my grandmother has buried two more since then. The man did many other great things with his time on earth and I respect the values of hard work and life lessons he taught my father, who taught me, and I am now teaching my own son. I hope i conveyed how much these mean to me and I'm glad I could share them with you fine gents.

Amazing how he was there for a piece of history. It's always nice to speak to people who were around for some of these things and hear their stories behind all of it.

I'm not very knowledgeable in pipe smoking at all, although I do plan on getting into the hobby in the future, it's amazing how they withstood the times and still look in great condition. I'm sure he's smiling down and probably would've loved to sit back and enjoy some quality time pipe smoking with you. Thanks for sharing the pics and a little story behind it all!

Absolutely. I'm glad I could. I forgot to say he was also an old horse marine who served in WWII. He died when I was 2 so I never got the chance to hear them from him but my dad and I frequently speak of him. Means the world to me that I have something of his that I will treasure forever

I will they still have old tobacco in the from the last time he smoked so they need to be cleaned. I actually want to find the tobacco he used to smoke. It was called Prince Albert. Anyone know if they still make it?

Yup. Price Albert is still around and should be quite easy to find. Enjoy them!
Edit: Just saw D.Point's response as well. Sorry!

i dont plan to break them all the way down. especially the meer pipe. apparently that was grandpas favorite.that one and the twist off bowls and according to my dad they both have about 30-50 years of use in them. Dad says he remembers seeing Grandpa smoking out of them when he was a kid (like knee high to a grasshopper) and Dad is 61 now

Those are some really cool pipes, but what really interests me about your post is the manner in which you posted them. You showed us a picture of the pipes but instead of telling us about what nice pipes they are, you went straight to telling us all about your grandfather which died when you were only 2 years old. The amount of respect you show to him and your father speaks volumes about the kind of person you are. I wish more people in this world held the same values that were obviously taught to you from the time you were a child. I know you've only been a member here for a couple months but it's people like you that make me proud to be a part of BOTL.

That is an amazing compliment my friend. Thank you. For me family is the biggest factor in my life and so just having something of his that was this personal. Something he treasured and kept in great condition until he passed means a lot.

Thank you gents for your kind words. It means a lot.

Those are some great looking pipes. I can't wait to see them all cleaned up. That is an awesome story about your grandfather. I wish I had someone in my family that passed down the art of cigars and pipes. I have been smoking cigars now for a few years and pipes for a few months here and there. I got into the hobby through my brother in law. I plan on passing it down to my next generation.
