BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Still enjoying it and getting some great smokes out of it. Actually now that I know how to use it, it's become one of my favorite pipes. I retract all the trash I talked about them here and elsewhere.
I will say, though, that I still don't necessarily recommend cobs for beginners, except for the gentlest of souls. I think briars are much more forgiving of poor form (sucking too hard, too fast, torching the **** out of the baccy, etc). IMHO cobs require a really light touch and are much more subtle than I originally thought.

I think I was fortunate to be handed a briar to start....even though that was something of a challenge to learn, too.
But, I received a cob in my noob trade and it has been somewhat painful. I will try the 'gentle approach' and give it another go. Aside from getting it too hot, too fast, I have a lot of problem with sucking tobacco, or more often...and much worse, ash, up the stem. I have not done much studying yet, and know I've got a lot to learn, so pardon the noob question....do you use some sort of filter with a corn cob pipe? Seems like that might solve some of my problems, but a quick search yielded too much 'noise'.

I had the exact same problems. I don't use filters but may try one in the cob.
For me at least, the cob needs to be packed lightly enough that there's almost no resistance. And then when I draw I don't even "suck" per se. It's almost like just normally breathing in. More sipping than puffing.
