  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I originally misspoke in my previous post....oops!

FAMOUS-SMOKE is where I get mine, not Holts.

$32.99 bundle of 25
Do those have a sweetened tip? I've heard good things about Flor de Oliva (particularly the Corojo), and I love lanceros/panatelas, but I'm not wild about sweetened cigars.

I almost ordered a bundle of FdO Corojos to hand out as birth announcements, but ended up ordering some Pepin Fumadores ($30/box!) instead.

I bought two of these online when I was buying some "V" lanceros--haven't tried one yet. Looks like I need to! Let's see, what am I doing tomorrow...oh I know, this!

Yeah, I do believe they're sweetened....or at the least, they have a real sweetness on the lips at first....but honestly, it goes away surprisingly quickly. You won't even taste it after a couple of puffs.

Nope, sorry guys, these do not have a sweet tip. That is not to say that you aren't getting a sweet start to the stick but it is not from any added sweetness like the Baccarat.

yup, dave is right. Cheap sweet tips would be some of the flavored cigars plus sticks like La Fontana and Baccarat, both made by Camacho (did you know Baccarat is Camacho's number one seller?)

Ah, makes sense.

I've never had a La Fontana or a Baccarat, so I guess I don't know what an "authentic" sweet tip is really like!

Man, several years ago I was looking for a cheaper smoke to use as my "everyday" type cigar and not waste my time or a lot of money. A good friend sent me a couple to try...I now keep bundles of them - they are a great cheap cigar...the FDO Gold is excellent with a morning cup of coffee! I've got some of the Corojo that I set aside Feb 06 and they are out of this world now! You won't go wrong with this cigar!

Ok Dave, now you've started it. You say these sticks are still made by "Oliva" and my local suppliers (2 of them) say "no" they are a seperate companies. Back when I could still order on the net I had to identify them other than Oliva's and could only find them listed as "Flor de Oliva". ????

I know that the net sells at great discounts and I listed the retail prices I have to pay here in So.Cal. In Cal we have to be carefull who we order from to stay out of the radar of the State Tax Commission. For years I would order from anyone and enjoyed the discounts and the lack of Cal Tax and sales tax. Got my hand slapped by the state and had to pay a fine and could'nt make any net orders for 2 years. My time over but i'm still gunshy. I just support my local retailers now with no worries.

I tried to e-mail you at your website but your contact area is under construction, therefore this post.

Peace Brother.

Bill,
No worries about posting here instead of emailing but if you need to email me in the future it is dave@empirecigars.net. The site is not complete yet but we are working hard to get it done asap.

As for the Flor de Olivas, I will double check this tomorrow when I am working. (I am working from home today) You could very well be right, I make no claim that I know everything about cigars, not even close. I am sorry about your struggles with the state. Although I know it can be a little harder on the wallet sometimes I am always in favor of supporting local B&M's anyway. I will let you know what I find out tomorrow when i can get to our catalogs and ordering info.

Take care.

What I've heard from my guys at my B&M (who are very knowledgeable) said that these are the sticks that allowed the Oliva family to start making premium cigars. They are made by the Oliva family. I also talked with Jose Oliva at the CRA event in Minneapolis, and he did mention this once or twice.

From the Cigars International Site:

Flor de Oliva is the rolled under the care of highly-regarded cigarman Gilberto Oliva.

Gilberto is the patriarch of Oliva cigars. So that has me thinking that the Flor de Oliva cigars are made by Oliva. Unfortunately I could not find any more direct proof than this...

There's a lot of confusion between the Oliva Tobacco Company (which has been growing tobacco since the 1930s) and the Oliva Cigar company (which is a relative newcomer, and is not related to Oliva Tobacco):

http://www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/CA_Archives/CA_Show_Article/0,2322,557,00.html (Oliva Tobacco)

http://www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/CA_Profiles/Cigar_Stars_Profile/0,2547,225,00.html (Oliva Cigar)

The latter article refers to Oliva Cigar as the makers of Flor de Oliva. Cigar.com seems to be confusing the two, and attributes FdO to Oliva Tobacco:

http://www.cigar.com/cigars/viewcigar.asp?brand=311

As far as I know, the only cigar made by Oliva Tobacco is the Angel 100.
