  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I wrote an email criticizing Robb Report's method of reviewing cigars aka only smoking 1/4 of each.

They got back to me today. Here is their response:

"Dear Mr. XXXXX

Thank you for your input. Although we feature numerous cigar reviews authored by individual experts throughout the year, our most recent approach to Best of the Best has been to invite a panel of enthusiasts to make the final selections from a group of top products chosen by staff. I forwarded your comments to Brent Butterworth, who wrote the Gurkha piece you cite. I’ve attached Brent’s response below and copied him and Richard Carleton Hacker in the event that you have further questions or comments. Thank you again for taking the time to offer us your opinion.

"Brent Butterworth’s response:

We appreciate your observations. Every cigar aficionado knows that cigars can change in flavor as they burn down. But by the time you're into the first inch, you've got perhaps 80% of the cigar's character.

In comparison tests, you have to make some compromises. We preselect for the panel what Richard Carleton Hacker and I, as experts, believe to be the best candidates based on our comprehensive reviews throughout the year. Yet even with this pared-down number of finalists, it would be difficult for every panelist to finish every cigar. Not only would the test take 10 hours, but the participants would grow fatigued. Nicotine intoxication would become a problem (and probably cause most panelists to drop out). By the time you got around to cigar #9, no one would remember what cigar #2 tasted like.

Also, cigars are inherently inconsistent, as anyone who's seen them made knows. The Gurkha one panelist smoked probably varied noticeably in flavor from that of another. So to achieve a truly accurate comparison test, you'd really have to smoke, say, 10 samples of each cigar, from maybe 5 different boxes, to get a full profile of each cigar's flavor. In that case, you'd have Mr. Hacker and me just picking our favorite cigars of the year, since we were the only ones who had that kind of complete experience. At that point, the results merely reflect the personal tastes of two reviewers, rather than the consensus of a panel, which in our opinion is far more valuable."

Mr. Butterworth,

Ye sound like citing CA in order to explain why ye do what ye do. I'dlike to know why did ye not gather a group of cigar smokers who have had their fair share during the course of the year before deciding upon 10 cigars between 2 people. Then, why did ye not give 3 of each (for a cigar worth of carrying the title of "best" should not be as inconsistent as to need 10 to judge them) to the judges for them to enjoy in the course of a lapse of time, taking notes on each one and getting back to ye after that. Lastly, why did ye not use cigar smokers as judges?

i have never read the robb report.
i also can't imagine anyone that is truly interested in cigars would take any advice that they would give on the subject. that would be like reading better homes and gardens to see who makes the best 9mm. (each of our contributors shot four diffenent guns once.)

I don't think the comparison is fair, seeing as how the Robb Report focuses on the finer things in life and consistently review cigars.

i'm not sure what way really works...

have you read some of smoke mags reviews? one guy says its full bodied the other mild and then i feel more confused about the cigar after i read the review.

reviews and the reviewing process are just so subjective. but i do agree a cigar must be most in its entirety.

My sister-in-law works for the Rob Report, and she has written several articles. Most of the people there are asshats. I would not waste my time reading the Rob Report. Most affluent people already know about products reviewed in the magazine. For the most part, it is a day dreamer magazine.

Edit:

Last Christmas I asked my SIL if she could hook me up with some of the reviewed cigars. She said "No, the owner smokes Cubans and passes off the freebee's to contributors."

Hmmmm... i don't know the dude, to be honest, but he sounds like a very "special" person, if you guys know what i mean, and picky.

And like Moro said, why don't they get a few cigar-smoker-judges to smoke one or two cigars each and like that they don't have to smoke 5 sticks each (between the both of them) i mean... it is something very stupid to do. I mean, yeah, than can be pro's but there's a lot of people that like to smoke good cigars.

Any ways, what ever. One review or two doesn't mean that it has to be like so, we all have a different development in our mouth, some with better senses some not. In the end, i think our own review is the very best because it's more personal and more to Who-you-are.

Or like most judging, they could have smoked one cigar each day for ten days and truly get fell for each cigar without hurting their palate. Seems kinda silly the way it was done but explains the results.

I wonder how one can assume that the first 1/4 of a cigar can produce 80 percent of a profile? I have smoked many cigars where the first 1/4 only represented the first.... 25 percent or so of the cigar profile, then it quickly changed.

Interesting information though.

Oh really? The first inch just starts the cigar and not until you get your ash working will you truly taste the cigar.

Thanks for bringing this up. Never read the Robb Report, nor do I intend to.

I agree with Puffing Rob, the first quarter is only 25% of the cigar....cigars are so personal I dont think theres any real way to decide the top 10 or 20 or whatever...i mean its all about your personal enjoyment and what you like....I would even go so far as to say if your into Black and Milds....so be it.....well maybe thats to far, yeah scratch that last bit it was stupid, no one s into black and milds....oh hell just smoke an padron and have a real cigar...
