  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Part of cigar smoking to me is the social part of it. Sometimes we talk about stuff I want to, sometimes we don't. It is all about give and take. If you don't like the conversation you can stay out of it, find someone else to converse with, or leave the room. If you want to just smoke in peace then staying home is probably the good idea. I know cigars would not be nearly as enjoyable to me if I only smoked alone.

Well I usually smoke on the porch and unless I have a few friends over, it's just me so I don't have to worry about being bothered. When I go to the bar to smoke (more often now since it's cold) I do get annoyed with the way some of the people are acting and being asked "Is that a cigar?", but that's what I get for going to a bar. I'd give my right leg for a place to smoke in the winter with comfy leather chairs and good conversation .

Well stop smoking on the porch and come down to Fatman Cigars sometime! Should be a good time tonight. Young (reps Graycliff, Pepin, and others) is trying to get Tim Wong (rocky) and Ed Trevino (CAO) down there for a game of cards and to see the new shop.

I guess my main point is men are quickly losing the ability to be gentlemen. If I was in a bar I'd expect it.

I'll practice some "nice weather we're having" lines.

Yeah I know I'm a bum. It's not even that far either! I'm on a motorcycle though so that complicates things with the weather and all.

Look at porn on were web enabled phone.
Hear in explicit detail what you would do to any semi good looking female that happens to walk into the store.
Hear what you did in bed last night to your latest date.
Hear you talk about the guy that just left and how/why he's strange.
Stay classy guys....stay classy. :disappoin

I think it is losing the art of conversation. I have always enjoyed meeting new poeple and coversation over dinner, a cigar or music. Three of us were in the shop a few afternoon ago. All about the same age. Talking politics, cigars and football. Couple guys came bought sticks and proceeeded to play video games on their phones for an hour occaisionlly throwing out a one liner to the group. WTF? People do not know how to converse any more. Text is easier.

I like just listening to conversations at the B&M. The clientele at the ones I go to are a little more...umm..."sophisticated/older." I'm young so I learn a lot just listening....I've learned more about loans, mortgages, investing, 401k, marriage/divorce, politics, etc.., than I ever learned in my college years.

What I'm trying to say is...thanks you old farts for teaching the young cigar smoker about life!!!!!

just playin guys.

Completely true. You know who has conversation down to an art? Old time barbers! There's a great one where I used to live...Dale & Fred's ...miss going to that place.

I see that one a lot too Chuck, I have worked many nights where 3-4 guys are staring at their phones the entire time they are here. I have also seen one guy tell a guy who talks people's ear off to STFU, told him he came to the lounge to relax and clear his head.

Yep same here. I just want to enjoy a smoke without the B.S.
I'd rather go to HERF's as that's more formal and pleasent, but for a daily retreat, I'll just enjoy my own space thank you!

We had that sort of environment at Grants up until the policy change got rid of most of the folks who frequented the shop. It was kinda cool on the one hand because doing what I do for a living and being kinky I could talk about it openly if someone asked, but I rarely brought that up. (It's not manly to smoke cigars, write women's romance novels and do other things I'm involved in, even in San Francisco) but I miss the bullshit to a point.

Most of the other regulars boycotted the place's policy change requiring a minimum of $15 purchase (was $25) and the cut in half smoking space (from 12 to 2, then to 5 chairs) but I didn't see that as the right way to treat the only tobacconist in the area. That's another discussion though.

Sometimes things get out of hand in groups, and cliques form. I think it's part and parcel with any group of people that get together on a regular basis.

The one BOTL that has the signature referring to "any cigar smoker being a friend" is one of my favorite quotes because that is EXACTLY how I feel at the end of my day. I almost feel that you folks "get" me LOL!

Btw if you're interested in what happened at Grants, one of the employees is a BOTL here and I have a blog post on it if you search. I'm not going to shamelessly promote it.

Heh. Same here. And what an asshole he is! ;)

Seriously though, I've enjoyed time at B&M's when with friends. I would never go just to sit and have a smoke myself and relax. My idea of a great relaxing smoke involves a good book and that's just way too easy to do in the Florida room.

I think you may be right, Chuck. That's a problem that's quite a bit more pervasive than just at the B&M.
