  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Oh man, I love a good Dark N' Stormy! I'd never tried ginger beer until I got into rum and 'discovered' the DnS.

Gosling's is the brand that is easiest for me to find around here and it's pretty good. Target makes one (I think it was under their Archer Farms brand) and it is horrible IMO... too sweet and not enough of that ginger bite. I've had the Reed's Extra (more ginger) and I like that one a lot.

I find the Gosling's here at most liquor stores and if you have Cost Plus World Market around you they have a pretty good variety there.

I read somewhere that the Gosling is supposed to be an exact recipe of Barrits. I can't conform/deny as I have not had either and I have not seen them for sale around me.

You could make your own its fairly simple and this way you can control the ginger flavour all you want. This recipe makes two liters.

1 large lemon
1 cup sugar
1/4 tea spoon yeast
2 table spoons ginger (you can use less if you don't like the ginger taste as much)
2 liters water

Grate the ginger and put it in a cup mix with lemon juice. Now take a two liter bottle and put the yeast and sugar in, toss in the lemon/ginger mixture. Fill half way with water and shake the shit out of it to make sure the sugar mixes well not fill up the bottle but leave some space up top for the yeast to do its business. Screw on the cap tightly and leave in a warm place for 24 hours. After 24 hours the bottle should be hard to squeeze meaning the ginger beer is ready if you can squeeze the bottle easily leave it for another 24 hours but be careful not to leave it too long it may explode.

Chill the bottle before drinking.
