Any tips on the best place to enjoy a great cigar and drinks?? Also looking for a great place to pick up some Arturo Fuente's down there as well.
Thanks for any, and all suggestions.

I found the humidity was so high, I could barely taste my smokes. Don't bring the good ones and be sure to NOT buy any cigars while there. They have a law that any smokes made on the island cannot be sold on the island. So they are exported then re-imported at a high cost. Anything not super expensive will be shit.

When I was there 3 years ago, on our resort was a small shop but the prices were sky high ($50+ for a Cohiba), the selections sucked and my Uncle was sold fake cubans as well from one of the resort butlers. To this day I still think the shop sold fakes too.

Bring your own smokes with you from home, which I'm glad I did.

And ask for a drink called "mamajuana" not to be mistaken for marijuana. That drink is amazing and after a few will have you feeling good.

^what @CVAC085 said. all 3 points. Especially the mamajuana. If you go to any of the resorts near the Exelence resort you will be like an hour away from any local shops.

Ah hour?

We have narrowed it down to two resorts for our next trip and Excellence is one of them. It's super nice and clean... wondering if there's anything as nice closer to the town shops

You wont be disappointed with Exelence on any level. But the capitol is almost an hour away. The tourist punta cana area is like 30 to 45 mins away I think. (mall, food, disco) Those resorts are far from actual Punta Cana.
Id go back to Exelence and be fine not leaving the resort except for a fishing trip or excursion.

Also, bring your own personal travel safe. I "KNOW" that the concierge skimmed some money from our safe... They all have the universal pass codes.

As for excursions, book them through the resort. They highly recommend you not going out on your own to explore the D.R. and I'd say listen to them. The locals will pinpoint you and other out of town tourists in the blink of an eye. On one of our excursions I went on with a group of people from my party, the guide told us to stay away from a group of the local vendors because they're known for causing trouble.

Do I dare ask what is in this drink? LOL.

Now that's scary. Glad to find this out now though as I'll be going to St Lucia later this year. I guess it's time to invest one of these. You can never be too careful especially when traveling abroad.

Reiterating.....bring your own cigars! Don't buy illegal substances as getting pinched there isn't like getting pinched in the States....when they pinch you feel it a decade later.

I was watching a documentary a couple of days ago about how many young DR MLB players have died in car accidents in the DR. I can't remember the #, but I think it was at least a dozen. Drinking and driving is apparently is very common and they even showed several drive through bars. Drive through and get a drink for the road. Just be careful!

Mamajuana or "Dominican Viagra" is the most overrated drink ever. But if you really have a hankering for a drink of rum, wine, honey, and what appears to be mulch, have at it.

Regarding excursions, don't take the long ones... The day gets very drawn out and there is no cutting them short.

Let me say again... only smoke the sticks you bring with you.

Take the long excursions. Visit Saona Island. Tour the country a little. Try and get a taste of the local culture and how they live instead of just being on the isolated resort.

Stayed at Secrets Royal Beach in 2015. Gorgeous resort. Warm, friendly staff. Gruesome food. The worst high-end resort food in many years visiting the Caribbean.
Cigars shopping a joke -- ludicrous prices, slim selection. Ditto the local cigar stores. Many fake Cubans. Bring cigars from home.
