  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Havana Footlocker 500ct humidor review

Back in December 2015 I decided to buy a bunch of bundled cigars. The problem was that My 2-50ct glasstops, 2-20 ct cheapos where completely maxed out. I thought about going with 2-125 count digital arch barrel humidors from Thompson Cigar but considering how quickly I filled my previous humidor I thought it best to go with something much larger. I was tempted by a cabinet humidor but 1k+ I could never justify and there was no way I was interested in a stupid cooler.

I wanted a display piece that was affordable, looked nice and had a super large capacity. After some searching around I saw the Havana footlocker at Cigars International and loved the price at $150 for a 500 count humidor so I decided to pull the trigger after searching the internet for the best deal. I found the same humidor at pretty much the same price at every site but the shipping was terrible $20+ until I found a 20% off code from CheapHumidors. The code knocked down the price to about $142 which included shipping so I pulled the trigger.

I was super excited and couldn't wait for it to arrive. The tracking number said it would take 3 days to reach me but it was not to be and it ended up taking 7 whole days to reach me. I was bummed but once it arrived I was jumping around like a maniac and couldn't wait to get it seasoned. Its funny looking back because everything took a turn for the worse once I opened the package up and saw (smelled more like it) what I received.

What i got had glue streaks all around the insides and smelled of glue and plastic. The construction was a super thin spanish cedar on mdf that made the terrible glue and plastic smell worse. I really thought I had bought a lemon and was dreading having to pay 25 bucks to return the sucker. Luckily I decided to give it a shot before squandering any money on return shipping.

Seasoning the humidor by wiping it down did not seem like a good idea since the spanish cedar veneer was so thin and I was afraid of it warping. I decided to go slow and to try and give it the best chance of working out. I used some activated water beads in a bowl that I placed at the bottom and waited for 3 days to see if it was working or if I needed to return the footlocker. It was shocking to see that it was fully seasoned in such a short time frame. The top shelf read 78, the middle 76, and the bottom 72 (I had two digital hygroset II hygrometer and the surprisingly accurate calibrated analog that came with it).

I bought a 8 oz humi-care black ice jar and since it was rated for 150-300 cigars I decided that should be enough. If more humidity was needed I decided that I could just retrofit one or both of the shitty large rectangular sponge humidifiers with cat litter. I really did not want to return it because I would be out 25 bucks in shipping charges for the return. It was shocking how well the Havana footlocker held humidity, the 8 oz black ice was perfect with the top tray being 72 rh, the middle tray 71 rh, and the bottom holding at 70 rh (I placed it at the bottom).

The glue smell was still noticeable but it had declined in intensity so I decided to continue with the set up. I was feeling much more hopeful and decided to placed the dividers where I wanted before I tossed in some bundled cigar the next morning. When I opened the footlocker the humidity had spiked to 78 rh at the top, 76 rh in the middle tray, while the bottom was still reading 70 rh. I was freaking out that I was now out of the return shipping but then it occurred to me the stupid dividers where at fault so I just removed them and waited to see if that would fix things.

The next day my hunch was confirmed and everything was back to a more acceptable 72-71-70 rh. I tossed all my crappier cigars and the newly purchased bundles into the havana footlocker and waited a few days to see what happened. To my surprise it stayed rock solid with only a 3 rh difference (72-71-69; not sure why but the bottom now reads 69 instead of 70 while everything else stayed the same). After about a month there was no more glue smell, in fact, it just smells like cigars. The glue streaks are still there since I was lazy and I didn't want to risk exposing the Mdf substrate. The Havana footlocker looks like crap construction and smelled like glue but after several months of use its extremely low maintenance and works extremely well for long term storage.

~7 months after the purchase I have 63 cigars in the 2 trays and about 180 in the bottom in their original packaging or zip loc bags. I uses this as my cigar dungeon, to house my bundled cigars, and where i rest all the cigars i buy before transferring them to my desktop or jar humidors . Other than the top two trays this is an organization nightmare unless you keep them in the original packaging, go with boxes, or use plastic zip loc bags to keep singles in the bottom section. Its way too awkward to uses this as your primary humidor since only the top tray is easy to deal with.

You can easily fit 60-80 cigars in the trays and 150-250 in the bottom without messing up the circulation of humidity. This is close to an actual 300 count humidor, it really can hold 300 mixed and larger ring gauge cigars. You can jam in more cigars but you will need to use several boveda packs to even out the humidity. This humidor really does hold humidity well and for long term storage this is a great option.

The negatives is that its really fkn huge and the bottom is a organization nightmare if you just toss in singles. This is for all in tense and purposes very similar to a coolidor except that it looks much nicer. I personally think coolers look terrible while this humidor really does look like a footlocker and blends in nicely into any room. This is not the cheapest way of storing cigars but it definitely is one of the best looking ways to go about it.

Thanks for the detailed review. Did you post any pics of it in the other forums? I would like to see it. I was looking for something in the 300ct range recently.

I took two real quick photos and i placed a typical 50ct wood humidor in front so that the scale can be seen. It holding exactly 70 rh with the bottom being slightly lower at 69 rh. I bought that humidor in the front to clear out the trays so that i only have ~ 20 per tray and a hundred plus in the bottom. That's the stupid humidor that you get at cigar international for $19.99 with 10 free cigars. It works but and i don't like it as much as my 50 ct glass tops.

@NPLopez looks really nice! It's awesome it worked out for you in the end. A shame it had the glue and smell issues in the beginning.

Question, did you borrow @navyvet camera to take the pics ? just busting your chops. I would like to get a humi that size.

That's from a Fire so its pretty crappy but its what was closes to me so that why the quality is so poor. Right now the only place that you can buy it for around $150 is from Famous-smoke shop and you just use the promo code Botlorg to knock off 17% which basically covers the ground shipping.

I'm happy with the purchase since i have plenty of storage space and it hold humidity extremely well.

Lol its cool. Thanks for the info on where to find it. After reading your review it's nice to see a humi that will stay steady for months at a time. How often to you add water or wet beads to maintain it? I'm guess I am asking how the seal is.

I use the humi-care 8 oz black ice polymer jar and its pretty much all I've ever needed. The seal is excellent but i do have that 50 ct humidor and a bunch of magazines stacked on top because i use the humidor like an end table in a spare room. I only open the humidor once or twice a week to check the humidity and its why i stack magazines and that humidor on top. Its such a convenient place and i rationalize it as a great use of otherwise wasted space.

I don't use PG solution in the 8 oz black ice polymer jar just straight distilled water. It cause the humidity to stabilize at around 70-72 rh so i retrofitted the two large rectangular sponge humidifiers it came with with cat litter and spritz one while leaving the other dry and its how i got the whole thing to stabilize at 70 RH instead of the 71-72 RH before. I recharge the polymer jar and one of the retrofitted humidifiers once every month. Its not really necessary to recharge every month but its just easier to maintain all my humidors at the same time instead of a stretched out process. I live in Arizona and keep the room at 67-68 degrees during summer because during winter that room usually stays at around 64-68 degrees since its on the opposite side of the sun exposure.

Polymer jars and cat litter are an amazing combination in large humidors in a dry climate like Arizona.

Here's a one year update of owning this humidor. The footlocker really hold humidity well and i found it increasingly easy to organize. I foolishly never thought of using the bottom huge dividers as extra shelves until i had a bunch of singles that i was having trouble keeping from getting lost at the bottom.

First here's a size comparison and then i'll post a follow up with the interior of the Footlocker.

Here's a size comparison of the footlocker against a 50 count desktop and a 32 quart sterilite air tight tote that i bought at target for ~$10.80 (Sterilite container dimensions are 18.5" x 14.88" x 11.13")

The footlocker is BIG and i bought the 32 Quart Air tight container so that i could store my boxes in a more accessible place. The bottom of the footlocker requires some work to get to since you have to remove the top two trays before you reach the stack of boxes at the bottom.

Here's the Interior of the Footlocker:

Top Tray has 40 Cigars double stacked with plenty of room for another row if i needed it. I pushed forward the Oliva Master blends 3 and the Ghurkha war pig so that you could see that the bottom row is double stacked.
004.jpg
2nd Tray has 25 Cigars single stacked and that pretty much all that will fit since i'd rather not sardine my cigars. I allow plenty of air flow so that the entire humidor is at the exact humidity.

006.jpg
Here's the two trays on top of the Sterilite tote. That's 65 Cigars and you could easily fit 20 more on the top tray without any problem or messing with airflow from the bottom to the top.
007.jpg
Here's the "bottom" with the first large divider on its side that i use as another shelf/tray. There are 30 cigars on the Divider that i use as a 3rd tray.
008.jpg
Here's the divider with the 6 Cao Brazilia chango tubos removed so you can see the 24 Oliva factory seconds robustos.
009.jpg
Here's the three "trays" with 95 cigars010.jpg
Here's the last divider that i turned sideways that i use as another tray. There are 36 Alec bradley black markets and 12 Corona cigars in the little tins. 012.jpg Here's the bottom tray with the 3 tins removed so that you can see that i have two more tins of 4 coronas at the bottom.
013.jpg As you can see i have the humidification at the bottom (humidity rises) It consist of an 8 oz black ice container and one of the original large foam containers that i modified to use cat litter.

Here's the last divider that i use as an additional tray so that you can more easily see the Alec bradley black market cigars.
014.jpg
And finally here's the bottom with 8 coronas cigars in the two tins and a box of cigars with 15 cigars inside.
015.jpg
I have exactly 164 cigars with plenty of space for several more boxes or 100-150 single cigars if i wished or needed the space.

I'm very happy with the purchase since the dividers at the bottom work as additional free trays when placed on their side. At about $150 shipped its hard to really find any negative with this humidor. The capacity is easily 200-300 cigars if you allow lots of air flow and with good organization. If need be you can easily jam several hundred cigars at the bottom if you don't mind using Zip-loc bags to create some type of order.

For mass storage Coolers and Air tight totes are actually far cheaper but i like that it comes with 2 large trays and 2 large dividers that you can easily use as two additional shelf/trays.

Not sure if anyone cares about humidor reviews but i found it help full when i saw videos and pics of this humidor when i made the decision to purchase it.

Thank you for your report! I have been trying to decide what direction I want to go. I have a cooler 28 quart to start, but I cant help but want a really classic and pretty humidor. I have been considering making my own out of some cypress boards I have had for several years. I may make it with different dimensions, as the boards are 18 to 24 inches wide. I have some woodworking tools and know I could build it with a little research on finishing the edges for sealing it. I would only need to buy the cedar for finishing the inside and making the trays. I use kitty litter for my cooler and really happy with the lack of maintenance, it stays very consistent.
