  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Heading to Boston.

Ah Boston 'tis where I was born and raised but I now live in Florida (Cigar capital of the USA!) . When I do manage to return I find the cigar scene very meager to say the least. There are very few lounges left and the state is trying to eliminate the few that remain. The one I frequent is called Cigar Masters , conveniently located on Boylston Street. It's a comfy place with a modest (by Florida standards) walk-in humi and full bar service. It's not an inexpensive scene as they have kind of cornered the market if you know what I mean.

The other place is an iconic tobacco shop: L.J. Peretti and Company located at 2 1/2 Park Square which you can get to by walking down Boylston Street from the Cigar Masters Lounge. It's been a Boston institution for over 140 years and it's worth a visit. Again it's small but the store has a cozy welcoming atmosphere and the wonderful smell of cigar and pipe tobacco is redolent. They offer no drinks (There's a Dunkin Donuts in the food court at the end of the block where I often get a Xlarge coffee before heading into Peretti's) but there are a few chairs (3) so one can sit and listen or participate in what is often a very engaging conversation. The guy behind the counter is "Bill" and he can direct you to whatever kind of cigar you may fancy. I've enjoyed some fabulous cigars and even better conversation at Peretti's over the years and I make it a must stop upon any visit back to Boston.

Alas, other than that I have absolutely no other viable options for you in terms of cigar lounges however there is one other tobacco shop located in Harvard Square in Cambridge which is a short subway ride from Perettis . It's called Leavitt & Peirce at 1316 Massachusetts Avenue (Get off Red Line at Harvard Station and it's about a one block walk up Mass. Ave on your right) It is a 127 year old tobacco shop that sells cigars , pipe tobacco , accessories and much more including chess sets and the like. However, you can NOT light up there.

I suggest that you check out the websites for all three locations and get a sense of what they have to offer. Have a wonderful trip to one of America's truly great cities and please have a fine smoke and lift a pint on behalf of this Native Son. Cheers! :)

REALLY?!

Cigar Masters is closed?! Holy SHT!!

Not much left, eh? How's the place in Watertown? How long has it been there? Where in Watertown is it located?

It's actually illegal to smoke outdoors in Massachusetts so this leaves damn few places to light up...when I do visit the few available venues they speak to you as if they are undergoing a persecution.....your sad news regarding Cigar Masters only underscores the frightful state of affairs regarding adult smokers freedom in the Birthplace of America. I am indeed greatly saddened.

So this means that if you want a cigar Lounge in the city that's accessible to the subway there's only Stanza Dei Sigari in the North End?
Hopefully, this place is still open! LOL

If he does decide to go to the Watertown location and is staying in Boston he will need to take the subway and a bus-or take a cab. (If he hasn't rented a car.) BTW: That Watertown Lounge looks pretty good. :)

Yeah....couple of summers ago, the guys at Peretti's told me that technically they can ticket you for smoking on a park bench but fortunately it's rarely enforced.....the state has passed legislation to essentially eliminate all cigar lounge type places over the next few years and there is a movement afoot to stop this from happening.

However, I am now finding that thankfully these "shut down" laws have been vetoed !! Great News Indeed!

Smoking in a park is different than smoking while waking your dog or waking around town, but yes smoking in the Boston parks is not legal, as for lounges being outlawed in the state, each city or town mandates that not the state, in fact a few towns have made changes to the legal age for buying tobacco to 21 from 18

So, it appears that the decision as to where one might smoke a cigar is going to be somewhat akin to the old "dry towns" liquor laws which create a patchwork quilt of places where liquor may or may not be served.....as I recall Arlington and Rockport were/are famously "dry" meaning different things in both places; Arlington permitted bars to sell drinks but no take out booze -no "packies" or liquor stores in Arlington.....meanwhile Rockport was totally "dry" no booze stores or restaurant/bar sales. This may have changed but it does sound like what is becoming of cigar lounges in the Bay State.
