  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hey guys, I was just wondering, what is appropriate herf behavior? like how many smokes should i bring, how long should I anticipate staying, etc. I just want to make sure i'm adequately prepared before I herf...

Over preparedness is my motto......well, it would be if I had a motto.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best is also a good motto. That being said, I have never actually been to a herf, so take that with a grain of salt.

Depends on the herf. I always load for bear. Lots of trading makes it fun. I never go anywhere where cigars are goig to be smoked as the main function without 15 to 25.

As far as the timing. Get there early and stay late.

I can't keep up the buying with all the smoking.

What's the rule on, say, sharing cigars? Not giving them out, but like letting someone have a puff of yours. Kosher to offer/ask? I never do and don't really mind if people ask, but also have no clue what the majority of people do.

Each herf is different and I guage how many cigars to bring based on how many people will be there. I always bring at least one cigar to give to each "herfer". Then I bring cigars for trading and some for me to smoke. The last herf I was at I took about 40 cigars and there were 14 people. Unless someone seems like they want me to smoke a gifted cigar right away, I don't smoke gifted cigars at a herf. I like to wait until the mood strikes me for a particular cigar. That's just me. Stay at the herf as long as you like. There generally isn't a hard and fast rule about how long to stay. It's also a good idea to have a general plan on what cigars you are going to smoke. Let's face it, after a couple of cigars your taste buds are going to be on overload. So smoke any special cigar that you are saving for a special occasion first, that way you'll taste all of the flavors. Honestly, after the second cigar, I don't taste much anymore.

As far as sharing cigars while lit with others, it's not something I do. I have herfed with one guy that always offers his cigar for others to try. Most people say no and that's that, no big deal. To each his own I guess, but not something I do.

I don't share food I'm eating and not about to share a cigar I'm smoking.

As far as packing up for a herf, I would take what you like to share and go from there. I don't go out expecting anyone to give me a cigar, but trades are encouraged. It's a great way to make some new friends and making a trade is a great way to break the ice.

Only been to a few, but Kevin's post is right on. Only think I could add would be that I always end up with more cigars than I took. Probably because there's usually a cigar store handy and pick up a "few" sticks. I took 15 cigars to my first herf and was just blown away by the generosity of the brothers. The next herf saw me with a full 24 count Caddie. I was able to trade and gift along with the rest then. Much better.

Passin' a cigar isn't something I'd be comfortable doing either. Seen it done, just never participated. Not sure of the benefit. Seems to me you're really not getting the true sense of the cigar with one or two puffs. But ICBW.

Excellent questions btw. Wish I'd asked before my first.

Everyone's pretty much covered things I think. THere aren't really hard and fast rules when it comes to this kind of thing. Take whatever you feel comfortable taking. 15-25 smokes is quite a few smokes to bring along, but it really depends on how many people are going to be there, who those people are, etc. Definatey take extra, but no one expects you to decimate your stash.

At a true "herf" the etiquette outlined by Kevin is exactly what I'd do......

...however at our local "all-buddies" hangout herfs, we break just about every rule of etiquitte there is. Including "tasting" each other's cigars.
