Pic makes it look bigger than it was maybe 8 inches long ....at first I thought it was a big worm then it's behavior made me think otherwise when I took the pic I could see the scales. Thinking black/rat snake as they are prevalent In the area but not sure how long it takes for patterns to develop

Sounds like you live in an ecologically diverse area. I'm jealous. I have shrews. Lots and lots of shrews. I've never seen a reptile of any sort on my property. Just shrews and squirrels.

My next door neighbor is terrified of all snakes and calls me to please come over and kill it. I have caught 3 garden snakes from his yard by request and brought them to my garden and released them. I have been hoping a black snake would find refuge on my property, but haven't seen one yet. The vast majority of snakes are beneficial IMO and the good ones should not be harmed.
