  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

My wife has a 2005 Tahoe that she loves. She had the side mirrors stolen of the car today. She had the same thing happen last week, and this was the first day she drove it to work since then. She has a parking spot but it's in a place that is easy for someone to quickly pop them out and not be noticed. We are working on a new parking spot, but in the mean time do you guys have any ideas to keep the bastards from stealing the mirrors? If there is some piece that I can add to make it so they can't pop the glass out I'd go get it in a heartbeat. It has those mirrors with the turn signal arrows in and they are expensive. They just popped the glass right out, probably took them 10 seconds.

aftermarket alarm system?? not sure if it will be sensitive enough for the mirrors though. if you are really bent on catching those bastards you could install a camera but that some $$$.
It has an alarm system, the problem is there are so many car alarms going off in NYC that people ignore them. And they pop it out so fast, they just beat it out of there before anyone notices.

I thought about a camera, but you are right, it's big money.

This is a random idea, but you could try setting up a webcam hooked up to a laptop hidden in your Tahoe. Battery life would make it sort of limited, but thats the only thing I could think of. Plus if you already have a laptop and webcam it might be worth a shot. Just make sure the laptop is hidden or they just might go for that too. Some people are just ridiculus.

I am not being a smart-ass here, I would ask the dealer or Chevy for a solution. Maybe they have some type of lock system that can attach to the door.

I didn't think of that Steve! I don't use the dealer for repairs, so it didn't occur to me.
Good thought! I'm so used to saying I'll never bring my car into the dealer for repair work that it hadn't even crossed my mind!

I'm sure they have gotten complaints before, let's hope they have a solution.

You just have the wrong type of alarm Kevin.

NYC folks will probably notice one of these going off ... [ame=http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bh7oOMlCW3A]LINK[/ame]

I don't know anything about side mirrors or alarms. But I was quite surprised to find when I went to replace the wipers on my wife's Volvo S40 that the whole wiper assembly just slides out of the arms. No need to pry them with a screwdriver or anything like that. It sure made the job a lot easier, but makes an easy way for someone to vandalize the car without a scratch.

They're stealing the glass out of them, or the whole assembly?

If it's just the glass, ditch the stock mirrors, get something aftermarket.
