  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hints of... aspartame??

A dozen or so years of this hobby and I'm still struggling to name some of the flavors I regularly come across. Not this time. In the last couple months I've come across two different cigars with a distinct flavor I've never run across before... artificial sweetener. Both were Dominicans with several years of age on them.

Specifically, it wasn't sweetness, it was the weird aftertaste/mouth-feel you get with aspartame (think Sweet and Low, or first-gen diet cola). Has anyone else had this experience? Maybe my palate's gone out of whack?

Were these maduros? All sorts of tricks are used to artificially darken and sweeten maduro wrappers, at least with some of the less scrupulous producers.

One was a non-cuban H. Upmann Reserve with 6 or so years on it. The other was the elusive Partagas 150. The 150 was new to me, but the Upmann Resrves were a staple smoke for me before y'all introduced me to more interesting fare. I never remember 'em having that sort of flavor.

I've had that taste too but never really was able to put my finger on it. The only time I tasted it was when I smoked a Drac ROTT and it was way way too wet

I am not familiar with the flavor. What I do know is this: I avoid Altadis and General cigars that are running on the coattails of their cuban counterpart. The only exception is the Partagas Benji Menedez. thats a great smoke.

I've tasted Sweet & Low for sure. Also some boiling Antifreeze / WD-40 aromas that are hard to describe from sick cigars. More than ammonia, it's like a chemical overload lol. Try sniffing the smoke wafting from the head after you puff. It helps you identify more flavors your tongue can't put an ID on!
