  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

How do corncobs burn compared to briars?

Just out of curiosity, do corncobs burn hotter or cooler than briars? I was smoking some Escudo in a MM Legend cob last night, and thought the pipe was awfully warm. Obviously I know this is dependent on other factors, such as the moisture level of the tobacco, and bowl shapes.

I have noticed that for me at least my cobs are easier to get hot than my briars. My thinking is that briar is much more dense than a corn cob and probably insulates the heat a little better. It also depends on how thick the bowl is on my briars as well. The thinner the bowl, the hotter it gets. I'm sure others with more experience will chime in.

I think a cob is more forgiving to getting hot though. I like the way certain blend smoke in a cob. EMP for example. I have yet to find a briar that smokes those blends like a cob. I'm sure it's out there though.

still newb. So far I've got the best burns out of my newbie trade cob. But briars are more interesting to load, and look better. And I still prefer to smoke them even if it means more relights and in some case warmer bowls.

For instance, my comoy is very thin-walled, and I always get the bowl warmer. I need more training maybe?

I've noticed on mine it burns a tad cooler than all my briar pipes. Remember, the inside of the bowls have to build up "cake" and in due time will probably burn a lot cooler. Mine are "warm" but that also depends how fast I'm piping as sometimes they're a little hot.

I'm still a newb to piping but just putting a little input into the thread.

Gotta say I've never "warmed" to cobs (haha) but I haven't noticed they burn appreciably hotter than briars. I do like the corny sweetness of them with non-Latakia blends but I always end up sucking in a mouthful of ash at the end.
