How to taste the taste

Well for now i only smoked 3 cigars and i really somehow cant figure out the difference between them,they all taste pretty much the same to me.

I smoked this cigars for now cigars .

1.dont even know what is smoked i just bought 1 for 7€ in a store and it jsut sucked ass big time
2.i bought it in a real cigar shop Montecristo No. 4
3.yesterday I smoked Cohiba Siglo III

I smoked Montecristo No.4 on the 1.1.2008 in the morning and it really wasnt that bad, I tasted some coffe,tobacco i hope im not wrong.

Yesterdays Cohiba was a real long smoke,it was pretty hard one,and i didnt taste that much,a few puffs where the same as Montecristo,and i tasted some pepper or some spice or something,correct me if im wrong.Oh and i wasted probobly 1/3 of the cigar cuz i was so thirsty and i drinked Ice Tea and after that i didnt taste anything...

and the next smoke will be Montecristo Edmundo,and thats my final cigar.

i really want to smoke cigars but if i cant taste properly then it's no use to smoke them is it ?

I found for me, as dpicenator said.... for my first several cigars, water instead of flavors allowed me to focus on the cigars more.

Then, also, a big tip.... smoke.. SLOW... force yoself to smoke slow...

Another thing I read that seems to work, for each 1/3 of the cigar (so eearly on, half way through, towrards the end), try exhaling 80-90% of the smoke regularly, and the rest through your nose. That seems to make the scents/flavors hit you more directly.

Another big one, that I took to, like you a couple of my first cigars where very strong, "big names" but too strong to really aprpeciate. Start of with the more mild/medium ones, and build up as you can actually appreicate the flavors and subtly.

The last thing I try (it's pretty geeky) but if i know i will smoke a particular cigar, I try to find one or two reviews on that one, and read what they say, then I try to search for / pick up on some of the things that should "supposidly" be there.

But.. I am still very new... so don't listen to me too much... i think the main things are smoke slow... enjoy... and the pallete will get better as you go along.

All three great ways to improve your palet. especially the nose and the reviews. Knowing what I should be looing for in a flavor really helps me pick it out and recognize flavor.

time is on your side! i also believe your pallette refines the longer you smoke. i certainly could not discern different flavors when i first started....

I'm just starting out and feel the best quality I have going for me is my patience. I can tell some tastes, identify degrees of smoothness (if that's a quality), and burn. But most importantly, I am finding what I like -- and with time and practice maybe I can start to explain fully why!

Don't be discouraged. Just smoke what you can get your hands on and you'll start to find out what you like and dislike.

i really want to smoke cigars but if i cant taste properly then it's no use to smoke them is it ?

I'm pretty new as well - about 6-7 months. About the only thing I can add is:

Take your time and enjoy the whole experience It's more then just the taste.

Here are some of the things I do to enjoy a smoke.

1. Check out famous-smoke.com. It's a really great site to just window shop. Read the reviews and descriptions. Find a few sticks that strike you as interesting. Then go to your local shop and ask questions about them and they'll be glad to help you pick out a few to try.

2. Before you lite up - really look at the cigar. Inspect it as if you were going have to pick it out of a line up later. Get to know the feel. Is it spongy? Is the cap securely attached. What's it smell like. Take a few draws on it before cutting the cap. Some cigars draw real easy through the cap. Cut the cigar and draw on it again. Notice the change in draw and flavor.

3. Make some mental notes about all your observations. If you end up liking the cigar you'll want to be able to "pick it out in a line up."

4. After the cut be sure to toast the foot before you lite it. If you've taken your time, you've probably spent about 3-5 minutes with your cigar at this point. And your just now ready to taste the smoke.

5. Be sure to have a drink with your smoke. It does tend to make you thirsty. Water of course won't interfere with the taste. But you'd be amazed how the tastes of a cigar and a beer can actually change the tastes of each other, for example. Depending on my mood, I'll have coffee, or something sweet like apple juice, or a cola. Of course my favorite - beer (pale ale or even a dark stout)

Now as far as the "cedar", "pepper", "spice" etc... tastes, I'm just starting to pick those up. So I can't offer much advice after this point.

I've been smoking for a long time and still can't come up with some of the flavors. I know what they are, but the brain doesn't tell me the names.. lol... Like I couldn't remember what band Sebastian Bach was in till last night.. It was on the tip of my tongue and then whammooo... Quiet Riot..

Get an Opus Fuente Fuente, smoke that cigar and while your smoking, see if you can pick out:
Citrus, Orange, Tangerine, Lemon
Black Pepper
Anise
Cedar

dude, your going to kill a new smoker with that stick....but a good idea to know what flavors you are looking for before you light up.

yeah easy wade the best advice i can give is to smoke slow not just take your time but draw slowly. you can notice a difference just between puffs take a quick heavy draw and you will see how this makes the smoke harsh this may have been what you did on your first one. now take a long slow draw and notice how much smoother and creamer the smoke gets i had to get my brother to slow down while smoking he was ruining the flavor of some good cigars. happy smoking

I'd be curious to know the RH of the cigars the OP is smoking.

The Edmundo is my favorite Monte, and usually easy drawing. If the RH is good, it would be hard to not enjoy and "taste" that one. Good luck.

BTW, if you're smoking cigars that are too wet, then they'll all taste the same, like bitter nasty. Are you having any problems keeping them lit or drawing?

no, no problems at all,but will really have to get a humidor,the whole cigar smoking is not that cheap :S

When I 1st started puffin' I was told to keep a cigar diary or a dosier. It helped me try to remember my previous smokes and kind of forced me to distinguish between different brands, wrappers, countries, etc. This might seem funny, but when I smoke a particular cigar for the first time...I take a big puff and sort of chew the smoke in my mouth. I also let the smoke escape my mouth and I kind of inhale a'lil through my nose to allow my palet to get a taste.
