I was just cruising one of the online retailers that I check out from time to time and had something pop-up at the bottom of the screen that made me wonder how much of our information is protected and/or shared? I guess it is only a first name listed but I know exactly who "Clive from Southgate" happens to be.

I always thought they made that stuff up. Pulled your zip code or POP address and just posted something for your geographic area. Did you get in touch with Clyde and ask him if he bought Southern Draw 300 Hands recently?

Google does the data collection. Retailer buy ad space from google. Google know everything about you. Even what you did last summer.

I don't remember why...I googled a cubs baseball score last summer. I probably wanted to tease a cubs fan. I was seeing stories on the cubs for the rest of the year. Nasty! Google knows you better than your spouse.

It's currently all over the board, but with most US companies surging towards the GDPR and/or CCPA protections. Many have EULAs that permit you to request clarification on specifically what they're doing with your data or request deletion. However, retailers receive a number of exceptions that permit them to carry out normal business operations. Further, they can almost always do whatever they want with anonymized, aggregated data

It's worth noting that the big question mark over the legal world is "What the hell does the GDPR actually mean?" So, a company attempting its very best to abide may still not provide security for users' liking. The standard is currently a moving target.

Most of the time, straight up no ads.
While reading a news article typically there is an ad break between paragraphs, in brave it just says "advertisement".
