  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I wish this pipe category would disappear

Why? Because you guy are seriously tempting me to get into pipes and I do not appreciate it! :)

Question: If I buy a cheap pipe and some good baccy, can I get a good feel for the hobby that way? I don't want to spend big on a nice pipe and then learn that I'm the "cigar-only" type. Thanks (I think)...

Yes!!! Corn Cobs smoke excellent! The pipe is a very cheap hobby to start out in and just make sure you give it a little time and patience. It can reward you thoroughly.

Are you referring to the cheap pipe or the tobacco? lol
the pipe... for baccy, pretty much all of it is cheap if you are used to buying cigars, even the expensive stuff. i'd recommend grabbing a couple of missouri meerschaum corn cob pipes with the natural finish, and grab a handful of tobaccos from GL pease, his stuff is quality and readily available. i'd get as many different style blends as i could. go crazy see what you like.

No matter what, pipe gives you a huge bang for the buck. You can buy a tin of really good baccy for the price of one premium smoke.

... and, to translate that a little further into cigar speak: the HTF stuff people chase is like $15, for a tin that is good for five separate hour long smokes at least. also, storage is mason jars. seriously, long term archival storage is $5 a dozen mason jars. or just leave them in a sealed tin if they come that way. further, most tins are like 1.5 ounces of net weight tobacco. if you can find a bulk blend you like, it is like $28-58 a POUND, translated into at least fifty separate smoking experiences. so, yeah, cheaper.

it is REAL easy to get lost on the gear, but a pipe will last you decades and more unless you completely go out of your way to ruin it. if you start with a cob and give it a few months of slow trial, and get a feel that you may enjoy the pipe, a decent new briar can be had for under a hundo if you look, and easily for a buck and a half. which most all of us have easily dropped on boxes before. you get even better deals if you have a place, or are willing to dig the net, for estate pipes; a little work to clean up, and you have yourself something someone already did the hard work to break it in.

in all, i REALLY like what hoshy said, about a pipe being like the good middle part of a cigar: i have yet to see the dynamic range of change and evolution in a pipe that i have in a great cigar, but a good tobacco well cared for and well packed in a good bowl, smoked at a good pace, can give you that nice reassuring richness of when a cigar really starts to open up for you.

is it for everyone? nope. but it is just as valid, yet different, an exploration and celebration of the leaf as a good cigar is. and, to be clear, this is being typed through a cloud of padron anny smoke; i am REALLY disinclined to pick a side. but i really do like pipe smoking as a good enjoyment while you hunt or wait for something amazing.

oh, and all the cool kids are doing it. so you have to now. o)

You don't need a link... You just need to wait about 3 business days for a flat rate to arrive...

Sampler on its way....

Just tried my corncob pipe for the first time tonight. I have some learning to do, thats for sure.

I think I didn't pack it as tight as I could have for a little bit then tamped it down for a little harder of a draw which seemed to help. I used somewhere in the area 5-7 matches to keep her going. It was fun and I am not discouraged from smoking a pipe again because I know it will take a few times to start getting a method down.

I tried a sample of GL Prase Jack Knife tonight, got a light sweet light smoke from it but I think I was concentrating on my lighting and packing so much I missed what notes might have been in there. I'll now let my pipe rest and cool, clean it in a little bit and give it a shot again in a couple more days.

My first shot was last night as well. I have a lot to learn as well.

Is it supposed to be like drawing of a milkshake?

I wasn't looking for a bomb, however, I should have known you were lurking here.

Fear the reaper, my son.
