  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I wish this pipe category would disappear

My first shot was last night as well. I have a lot to learn as well.

Is it supposed to be like drawing of a milkshake?
pretty much... just remember sip, don't gulp. you'll get the hang of it and a feel for the best cadence for each pipe and tobacco in time. smoking a pipe takes more patience and has a steeper learning curve than cigars for sure. #1 piece of advice i can think of though is take it slow and don't be afraid to let it die and relight, that way you won't microwave your tounge. we cigar guys have a tendency to puff to hard and too often hoping to get more smoke and a stronger flavor at first, but i assure you that is a bad idea.

I prefer it to be a little tighter when i first draw and it loosens up for me as i go. also dont light until you got your pack right, if it doesnt draw good dump it out and repack. And the biggest thing is dont tamp unless you have too. when you tamp just like a cigar you are getting rid of that insulator of ash. a good ash makes it stay lit and smoke cooler. you only really need to tamp to relight. And the most important thing and hardest to learn for me, if its smoking to hot and biting your tongue set it down come back later i think alot of blends taste better after they have set and you come back a couple of hours to days later.

UtahRootBeer, i don't wanna be disagreeable... but i gotta disagree with your tamping philosophy. although it's probably something a new pipe smoker needn't worry them selves with yet, tamping often and GENTLY is key IMO. i suppose different folks are gonna have different techniques and all and if thats what works best for you, great. but i wouldn't want a new pipe smoker being afraid to tamp throughout their smoke. this is a really nice article on the subject that is more articulate and succinct than i : http://www.apassionforpipes.com/neills-blog/2010/11/9/tamp-often-for-better-smokes.html

Go and disagree away, by talking and sharing we all learn new methods, nobody knows everything. i love trying a new technique and you were right i was to harsh on tamping, personally i over-tamped as a new pipe smoker and so i had to relight alot and had a hot smoke for me. GENTLY is the biggest key to tamping thanks for the heads up sam a.

Doesn't mean you'll get into it.. never hurts to try something new. I tried it thought it was too much effort rotating pipes, cleaning them and all that so never got beyond that.
