What's the best way to make two parties comfortable they are not getting ripped off.

If I have a product I want to sell someone, how do they know I will ship it and how will I know they will pay for it?

Tell 'em that I'll vouch for you. (But as was said, past feedback somewhere else is a good record of trust).

As for the payment part, that should be done first ... just like any other online sales.

there are "escrow" services available

also, ppal has "buyer protection" and "seller protection" - he/she would also be protected if using a charge card.

When I was selling my HT couch I told people it was cash or PPal. Either way, the transaction was to occur during pick up.

I guess it is up to the buyer to trust the seller. That makes sense.

I have friends that have used escrow.com when buying / selling large ticket items online. I am not sure as to what their fees are, but I have heard good things about the service.

Like Mark said, if its that big of a deal they have escrow services available.
