JRR Tolkien's Pipe

Anyone know the brand / model pipe that JRR Tolkien is smoking in this picture (http://www.tolkienlibrary.com/press/images/tolkien_lres.gif)? I've always been a fan of Tolkien. I believe this photo makes him look like the quintessential professor.

Somehow the web address I typed did not become a link; I guess you need to copy it into the browser address window to open it and view the photo.

No problem. If you want to be able to post the picture yourself next time, just include the direct URL to the image and put it between image tags. Like this:

Note, you shouldn't have a space between the / and the img in the second part of the tag.

You're probably right about it being a run-of-the-mill pipe. Tolkien was a very prominent academician at Oxford University for many years, but I doubt he made much money. His books became bestsellers after his retirement from Oxford. I think he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth shortly before his death.

Tolkien's pipe isn't long enough to be a churchwarden. Ian McKellan as Gandalf is smoking what appears to be a churchwarden though.

Tolkien's pipe looks like it might be a Billiard., possibly a Dublin with not much taper to it.

I'm at a loss for a manufacturer though.

The pipe Tolkien is smoking in your picture is of the kind called a Dublin. It's one of the classic pipe shapes.
