Just brought my first pipe

Hey BOTL!

So, I'm a Cigar guy, but I'm curious about getting into pipes. I just brought a Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob Pipe with a nice fragrant Cherry Almond Tobacco. I'm looking forward to using it for the first time this evening, but wanted to see what I should know when smoking a pipe for the first time, and have anybody has had experience with Corn Cob Pipes. Also, the pipe came with a filter. It seems to be mixed whether or not it should be kept in or be taken out. Anybody have thoughts about that?

Use the filter until its "dead" then discard it and try the pipe for a while without it.. see what you think.... its all personal preference/choice...

cant beat a MM for a starter pipe.. good choice there...

hit youtube and watch a couple of videos on packing/tamping/smoking/cleaning pipes... there are a variety of methods... try a couple of different things and see what you like...

Hey bud,

There are a few stickies that have a wealth of information in this forum. Good thing to know is it really doesn't matter how much you relight your pipe. It doesn't affect the quality of the smoke like it does a cigar. Now the hardest part for me was learning how to pack my pipe to smoke it.

The more efficient the pack the less the relights.

Cobs are great to see if you like the idea of pipes. Many people still use them.

Congrats on your first pipe! Now buy tobacco, fill pipe, light and enjoy! Don't get to caught up with the "right way"! What has been mentioned,YouTube is a wealth of info for a beginner pipe smoker. It's how I got a lot of my info. Don't be afraid to relight and enjoy your pipe!

Best advice I can give is don't be afraid to dig out the tobacco and repack it if your test draw is too loose or too tight. After packing a few bowls you will get the feel.

Welcome to the world of pipes! Don't get discouraged with it. It takes along time to get it right and which pipe tobacco works for you. Keeping a pipe lit and tongue bite are the two that really gave me a hard time starting out and even to this day I have issues with it. You may find that flavored tobaccos like what you bought cause more tongue bite than say an English blend. Tobacco with Burley in it burns cooler too so that helps as well with the bite. Pipes are fun brother. It is a craft you really have to try over and over and over to really figure out how to pack and tamp and all that. On top of that, most pipes act differently. You can get the general basics down, but then have to learn the personalities of your pipes. A lot of learning involved.
