  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

    Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Maybe this will spark some conversation specifically regarding professional courtesies in the cigar industry and the behind the scenes wheeling and dealing between manufacturers, brand owners, and retail outlets. The cigar industry is actually very small. Cooperation and communication (privately, respectfully) between brand owners allows for an environment that will keep the latest and greatest cigar from mimicking it's predecessors in name, branding, or even sometimes blend. However, although the industry is still considered small (comparatively), it is filled with hundreds of small brands and "rolled-in-house" cigar companies and retailers. As you might expect, and as we see with the Snake Oil name, it is somewhat easy to overlook some similarities in naming/branding/marketing of new releases with so many smaller competitors. This is especially present with retailers that sell 'old-school' and are not currently utilizing web/social media technology to reach consumers. How many shops can be thought of that don't have a website or use social media? A lot.

In my opinion, communication between competitors as present in the premium tobacco industry is vital, and infused with politeness and courtesy this communication can help industry leaders (like Crowned Heads) push their creative bounds. Like he says in the article, the name 'Blood Medicine' actually fits better. Jon wouldn't have been prompted to change the name until far too late, causing irreparable damage to the Crowned Heads brand, if not for a simple phone call from Outlaw Cigar Co. Kendall could have let it ride, he could have gotten his lawyers involved, he could have let Jon release and then shit-talk CH until he ran out of breath, he could have could have could have. But he didn't. He just called. Respect.

On the same point, respect for Jon for biting the bullet and changing the name. Yes, it may seem like he didn't have a choice (because what can you do, right??) but he did. He could have taken the hard road, used his muscle, and probably ended up with rights to Snake Oil... but he didn't. Why? Because that's fucked up, and Jon Huber doesn't do fucked up shit. bahaha (sorry, I had to).

Am I just rambling here? hahaha
