What's new
  • I've said this before - but this is just a reminder. I'll be breaking BOTL over time in order to get it into a far better place. Just be patient if you can't reach us! We'll be back

Just tried my First Anejo shark yesterday...

I've been keeping a couple of Anejo Sharks in my humi for about three months now and I toasted one up at a wedding last night. I had mixed thoughts at the beginning (wasn't getting the flavors I had expected or the strength) But after my (Soon-to-be) wife brought me a water and some food and I went back to the cigar (I had ony smoked 3/4 of an Inch) It was amazing!!!! The strength was right where I had expected with higher end Fuentes and I tasted vanilla, cinnamon, liquor and cedar throughout the whole stick. I burned it as far as I could go :)

My question is.... Do any other BOTL's experience the same issue with Anejo's? Does the taste and strength become better after a meal, or do I just need to try more and use this as an excuse to drain my bank account some more?:ccool:

The younger ones can be muddled for quite some time IMHO. I've had several rott and within a year of release and had a similar experience, only a lot more pronounced. The best thing you can do, if you have the patience, is take them out of the cedar, if it's not a shark, and leave them be for at least a year. You will be well rewarded.

But, yes, I agree with many of your flavors. These are my favorite Fuentes. You can keep the opus, pass me the Anjeos!

Good to know. I've hung onto a few that will be coming up on a year soon. They were good ROTT but nothing that really Wow'd me. If they're starting to come around I may have to try and snag a box of 46's or 77's this year.

here's the thing for me about anejo (to contribute tithe discussion, and not just poke ATL); being as the core is based on an opus framework (tweaked) with CBL on top, they can always stand a little aging. or even a lot. BUT you have much better luck with them ROTT than opi. or at least i do.

it may have been you. after food and water, you may have been, either biologically or psychologically, more ready to sit down and listen to the cigar. if i am hungry, tired, or distracted, i usually never pull something that needs my attention. it's good to burn a smoke to unwind, but it's aggravating to know you aren't getting the most of it because you are not mentally present.

What JavaJunkie said is extremely true for me. Also, for me anyways, I recently discovered smoking after a meal and/or with a drink (ice water has become my go to.)usually helps me enjoy the stick more.

they are good fresh, and really shine 1.5 years +....

but you said they were in your humidor for 3 months, i do not think they were released in July or even father's day in june... They are usually released in december each year. so my guess is you smoked a 9month old stick and you are right smack in the middle of the sick period.

my b&m puts a box of sharks out each month on the first of the month. they are all from his december allocation

i know there maybe exceptions to this ie. fuentemania and events

I don't think the Anejo's really have a "sick" period. Fuente ages there tobacco pretty well before release. Like Java said, they get better with age, but I've never smoked an Anejo that had the famous ammonia and metallic taste. I agree with ATL, I'll take the anejo over the opus anyday. Just one mans opinion.

I respectfully disagree. When the cigar gets rolled, it gets wet, which in turn kicks off fermentation. Maduros get it bad because there is an abundance of extra sugar left over in the leaves. I read this years ago on another forum specifically about anejos. I remember it because whenever I got a box, I love them, and then they seem a bit off. It always takes some time for them to get back into the zone. at least for me anyway.

I am with you on Opus X. I have enjoyed them, but will take an anejo over one any time.

The trick to aging Anejos:

Buy a box to smoke this year, along with a box or two not to touch this year.
Buy a box next year and sit on it. Open one of the boxes you saved from last year and smoke those.
Rinse & repeat :)

Love this thinking. Now to start a separate bank account so I can afford it....... Haha

Do it with a fraction of a box to get started! Smoke 6 age 6 etc.

I think the meal/water combination after looking back really was what did the trick for me... I'm going to buy a couple more at my B&M at the end of the month and age them until my honeymoon in March... Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it

Being that I went back to it and it knocked my socks off, I think it was more of a hunger/thirst issue, but this is the first I've heard of a "sick period"... This is something to consider since I've only been smoking a little over a year
