  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Kicked down a new slope.

I got punted down a new slope by Griz and now I need a little help.

My main questions are about making sure I take care of the pipe properly and don't do anything to hurt it. Does it require any sort of breaking in even though it's an estate pipe? What things should I avoid doing that might cause problems?

You will hear many different sides to the breaking in theory...... Personally I load the bowl and I smoke it. I use whatever blend I feel like although never an aro, and I smoke it. Never had an issue. My only advice would be if it gets too hot to hold in your hands put it down.

Also who has this guys addy......

Can't wait to see your journey - I've been thinking about starting this journey myself but am nervous to start another potentially expensive hobby.

Welcome to the piper side of things! There are a few different packing methods but the one that Rev posted is really easy and effective so you should be good there. As far as "breaking in" you're fine to just load that guy up and smoke it. After you smoke a bowl you should let that pipe rest around 24 hours before you smoke again. That way it will have time to dry out and you won't end up with a "sour" pipe. Once you get a bit more familiar with your pipe(s) you'll be able to tell if you can smoke multiple bowls before they need rest, but for now just stick to the "one bowl a day" theory. I've got pipes that I can puff on almost all day and they are just fine and a few that only like one bowl. You'll get the hang of it. Don't worry at all about relights or trying to keep the pipe lit the entire time either. That will all come with (some very fun) practice. Relax and enjoy you're new hobby. We're here to help!

I doesn't have to be expensive. Missouri Meerschaum cob pipes smoke great and are inexpensive. And don't need resting between smokes. The tobacco is not super expensive. Estate pipes on eBay can be had not too expensively. But a $2 Czech tool and some pipe cleaners. Read these threads. Ask us questions. It's a great smoke and has essentially replaced cigars for me.

Same here @The_Rev. I haven't had a cigar in quite some time since I took up piping in March! :)

Welcome to the dark side @Wasz !!

Super cool. Pipe tobacco smells so good when someone is smoking it. I had a childhood friends who's dad use to smoke a pipe, I use to think it was so cool ahaha

One of these days I may get into it, I think @99TRILLS use to be quite the pipe guy. Maybe he will drag me down that hill.

I had a v herf today with @The Munt and got some tutoring. My first serious attempt at smoking most of a bowl I think went pretty well. I smoke about 2/3 of the bowl before I over tamped it. I had to do a few relights, but I didn't think it was awful. The help with what a good pack looks like was invaluable.

The flavors are totally different than cigars, but very enjoyable. I think with a bit of practice I'll have it reasonably down pat. Very fun stuff. Thanks a bunch Dan.

Awesome that Dan helped you along. Eventually, you'll build up a small collection of pipes too so you can have a rotation should you get further into the piping world. It takes time, practice and patience. I also watched a bunch of youtube videos as well to help me along. Don't be afraid to ask any questions either. As @stin187 said, we're here to help!

It was good fun man, I'm new to it so I learnt a good bit about technology this morning haha! @wantacigar even crashed the party and it was a bonus to see him un box an epic bomb from @Smoqman will definitely have to do it again thanks Brian!

One question though what's the difference between a V- Herf and an E-Herf? Lol seen people talk about both?

It can get expensive at first. At least for me it was since I had no brakes in a very slippery slope. IMHO, in the end I find that it's a little cheaper than cigars. Plus, if you enjoy a certain baccy, you have at least 2oz or more of it to enjoy depending on if you get it in bulk (which you can usually buy an ounce or more) or a tin, depending on what you choose to pick out.

I think they're both the same. I had a good time too. Maybe we can get a pipers thing going
