  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Been looking through my Dad's collection of pipes and keep running across pipes with Kiko stamped on them. Most seem to be merisham lined. I've done some internet searches and have found very little on them. They were apparently popular in the UK and distrubuted here in the 80's. Does anyone have any additional info on them? Just curious. One of them has been around for as long as I can remember and for some reason have always liked the looks of. It's a Kiko 45, leather encased and curved. Doesn't seem to have been used much. I used it this morning to enjoy a bowl of Orlik Golden Slice that was part of Fox's great sampler (thanks again Fox). Excellent smoke, although a bit strong for the ride in to work after a double ristretto and no breakfast......

You got me curious since I had never heard of Kikos. It appears they were made in Tanganyika, now Tanzania. I figure you found most of the same information I did. I could not find any pictures, but did find a lot of references to "African Meerschaums".

They apparently aren't well regarded. The African meerschaum is considered to be of lesser quality than Turkish meerschaum and the briar is also to reported to be of a lesser density.

This does bring up an interesting question (at least to me). If a pipe has a meerschaum lining, is it desired or even necessary to build up a cake?

To djs134: Re -- Your post of May '06 ('finding Kiko pipes among your dad's collection) prompted me to join BOTL Cigar Forums, just so I could reply w/ my comments:
I'm on a quest for a certain Kiko pipe:

KIKO 79A meerschaum-lined pipe as near-new as possible!

Black, apple-shaped bowl, pebbled texture, Tanganyika, (little White Elephant on 1/4 bent stem: a Kiko hallmark); This is my "signature" pipe; I have over 200 pipes, but this Prince pipe is my favorite. There is a large canvas portrait of me smoking this pipe. I lost the original in the 'NAM -- 40 years ago, and would very much like to replace it. I've had it in My Favorite Searches for 2+ years, but nothing has turned up. I will be in debt to anybody who has it, and is willing to part with it?!
