  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Okay, so I'm very very new here and this is my first ever review so be gentle! Although I've only been smoking cigars for a few years on and off I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Cameroon cigars.

I think in high school it was the whole story behind the Cameroon leaf and the difficulty of cultivating a whole crop or maybe the fact that it is one one of, if not the only wrapper leaf grown in Africa, or even the delicate task of rolling a cigar with such a fragile leaf. Now, as a senior in college and a newly baptized Brother I feel that my love for the Cameroon has only increased.

The whole point of this thread (and the other to come) will be to asses what other Brothers (and myself) have deemed the best Cammy cigars out there, hopefully determining a King Cammy at the end of it all. So without further ado it is my pleasure to bring to your attention the La Aurora Limited Edition 2006 Robusto.

According to CA I believe this is the highest rated Cameroon stick they've ever reviewed (corrections welcome!). I won a lot of five from cigarbid for a steal at $25.

CONSTRUCTION: Even before I removed these from the ziplock baggie, I was startled by the construction of these robustos. When someone refers to immaculate cigar construction, these cigars are a shining example. Not a single tear, rip, nick, anything on this cigar. Regarding firmness the only cigar that I've ever smoked that was as dense as this was the Padron 40th ann (which costs about $15-20 more). The draw was firm to start but loosened up over time. The burn was RAZOR sharp, required no relights and the ash was among the whitest I've ever seen. If I had to estimate I'd say I had over 2 inches of ash before it fell.

FLAVOR: So here is where y'all need to be kind :) So there was a very pleasant sweetness about this robusto, but without much of the spice that Cameroons seem to be known for. For me, this is a plus since I'm a fan of smooth cigars. The aroma was almost intoxicating and I detected rich-earthy tones along with some chocolate with each draw. I'll have to smoke another one to see if I can detect even more flavors so stay tuned.

OVERALL: I would HIGHLY recommend that any Cammy fan try this Aurora. I would think that even those who haven't had a Cammy would still enjoy the wonderful flavor of this cigar. It took me maybe 1 1/4 hours to nub this cigar due to it's density (it's only 50x5) and I very much look forward to my next one of these. At $5 I feel like I was stealing these sticks but I would definitely pay the ~$14 price tag these usually command. In terms of a score I'd give this one a 9/10. I'm a big fan of easy-ish draws that produce a good quantity of smoke which for me didn't happen until about 30 min into the cigar. But if this is the only thing I have to complain about then I'd conclude by saying that the La Aurora Preferido Ltd. Edition 2006 robusto is a damn fine cigar and a superb Cameroon, one that any fan of this leaf would very much enjoy. Thanks for reading!

Sounds very good nice review. I'll have to try one maybe my local has these, cause I do like a good cammy. With that said my 2 favorite cammy cigars are the AF Don Carlos line and the AF Hemmingway line both have impeccable construction and both produce volumes of sweet cammy smoke, which is so pleasing to the pallete.

terrantheman, consider those AF's noted, I'll try and get my hands one some for future reviews. I probably should have provided a list of the sticks I plan to review so I'll just do that now: (note, just because they're listed does not mean I have them currently in my possession)

-La Aurora Preferido Ltd. Edition 2006 robusto (completed)
-La Aurora 1495 Cameroon 1994 (not sure if these are still around)
-God of Fire Carlito's blend (on the way, thanks Brooks!)
-Gurkha Royal Brigade
-Gurkha Grand Age
-AF Hemingway
-Carlos Torano 1916
-Oliva Serie G
-Partagas Decadas Ltd. 2007 (I think the 2008s are out now too)
-Partagas 160
-Perdomo ESV '91 Maestro
-CAO L’Anniversaire Cameroon

Please keep in mind I'm not going to review EVERY cammy cigar out there, just the ones that the Brothers enjoy the most. So if I've missed any big players, please let me know!

Great review! I'd be interested in hearing your comparison to the AF Hemingway in particular, as that's my current benchmark. But I have yet to try the Don Carlos or any God of Fire blend.

Great job on the 5er for $25! That is a steal indeed, I've put in dozens of bids at that price on those and never won, so enjoy! I did win a lancero single for $7, and since that's usually a size I like, I'm very excited about that.

I'd suggest you try the LA Pref Lancero as well, because that size has more wrapper flavor, and when you're talking a Cammy...that spells yumminess!

Good review. This is probably my top Cameroon. Great stick. Also, the La Aurora 1495 Cameroon 1994 is pretty hard to find. The last place I saw them was Cigars Direct.

Glad you enjoyed the review guys! I'll be sure and try to procure some of the sticks y'all have mentioned. I'm just sad that I only have 4 more of those Aurora's left :sadstare:

I have smoke tons of all of these, except the partagas decadas, which I would lve to try, although I have had a couple partagas 160's. By far the GOF carlito blend is the best cameroon I have smoked yet, with the Perdomo's Edicion De Silvio Keeny or Grovy cameroon coming in a close second. These two are Mind blowing cigars. my 2 cents.

Donk, I've seen a few of those Perdomo Edicion de Silvio's pop up on CBid every now and then but I hesitated because I've heard they were a let down, granted they could have easily been referring to the conn. or maduro versions. If I can find one at a decent price I'll pick one up and do a write up. Thanks for the suggestion!

not a problem, and I have been a big perdomo fan fro a long time, the Edicion De Silvio line as well as the ESV 91 line either natural, maduro or Cameroon DON'T SUCK! these are excellently made, excellent smoking cigars. I say try everything and make up your own mind. I love Perdomo's cigars.

I definitely agree with you on the Perdomo ESV Conn, those are just fantastic! I've got one ESV Maestro waiting for the right moment but It came with a wrapper tear halfway up! How does this happen to a tubed cigar??? I doubt it will take away from the taste, but I'll have to dock the cigar a few points on construction...

If you bought that somewhere, make them replace it. Any reputable shop or online store should do that.

As far as the LA 1495 Cameroon coronas, they pop up on cbid every now and them. A box (10) usually goes for around $40-$50, but I won a couple singles for $3 apiece once.

njstone, I won that stick on cbid last week, is it really worth returning and do you think they will actually do something about it? Thanks!

Yes and yes. I inspect every stick I get from CI or cbid, and any cracked wrappers go back, absolutely. The cs there is excellent and they'll send you a replacement no questions asked (you'll have to send in the wrecked one, though).

Just out of curiosity, how much did you get it for? I'd like to pick up some of these myself sometime.

I got it for $11. Not as cheap as I would have liked but it was still less than the $16 that some places charge. If you come across a box of 10 on cigarbid (saw one recently) I'd happily split it with you. just keep me posted.

get yourself a bottle of cigar glue, its made by Credo I think, I don't know how many cigars that has saved for me. It is only a couple of dollars. It's a life saver.

good review!

one thing you mentioned that I have heard countless times is people refer to Cameroons as spicy (you didn't in your review but you noted some feel that way).

i don't think Cameron leaves are spicy at all. The Cameroon plants are actually originally from the Sumatra varietal. Sumatran wrappers are mild and sweet, and also thin (unless Litto is growing them).

Most of the Cammies you mentioned above are not too spicy. I think there is an underlying sweetness and woodiness to Cammies, but not necessarily spice. Maybe you could stretch with "Cinnamon" flavors, but any spice to me would come from the blend.

Sorry just rambling...

I would add the Casa Fuente to the list - better than any other AF Cammies.
