  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Prelight draw yields slight honey sweetness, some spice and hint of red pepper, and a mint/eucalyptus

Perfect draw with slight resistance.

Smells like hay, cut grass,

Wrapper is a medium dark brown with some visible veins, a couple visible bumps and one toothpick sized hole mid way that does not appear to affect the binder.

1st 3rd
Some Red and Black pepper on the throat and retrohale. Sweet tobacco and some hay flavors coming through.

Switches to more nutty and earthy flavors. Some woody notes around an inch through. Burn is perfect, tight white and grey ash. Almost no tooth. Getting a hint of sweetness on the palate and retrohale. I don't want to call it sour, but I'm getting something like a faint goat cheese flavor hitting mid palate here and there. Then again I am having an IPA with this.

I do get a creamy characteristic but it's not pronounced.

Ash dropped around 1-1/2" and a slight cream cones in. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1434075110.579729.jpg

2nd 3rd
I'm now getting much more spice, cream, woody notes and overall depth. Thank goodness! I was a little worried. Getting a charred wood and black pepper spice. Some savory and chewy notes come in. I'm salivating heavily so not sure if I'm getting salty or that's just Saliva. Cream/spice and pepper/earth trade back and forth with sweetness mixed in. It has nice flavor transitions and complexity here.

Into the final 3rd I get cream, some tar, some spice, and a deeper savory flavor. It's not just the saliva. Some nuttiness still remains. Burn is still putting on a show, it is essentially perfect. None of the cheese notes remain. It's now toasty, creamy, and earthy with very slight pepper.

Pepper fades entirely and I get slight cream and woody notes till the nub. Burn remains flawless.

Overall medium body, and medium+ strength.

I find this to be a good cigar. My opinion is that it will come about with some age, but I'm not experienced enough to know that for sure. I just got a sense of slightly unbalance flavors. It started off meh, and by the 2nd third was complex and tasty, then ended much more balanced and well rounded.

These arrived Monday and were in my wineador until Wednesday before I tried one, so essentially ROTT.

This is my first review and I'm a noob, so bear those things in mind when you read this.

Thanks man, please drop a note after you try it. I'd be interested to see how the flavors I picked up compare to those of others.

Thank you all, gentlemen. I hope my notes and flavors aren't too far off the mark! Please do provide feedback if you smoke one and get something different. I'm open to the idea that what I think I'm tasting may not be what I'm actually tasting!

Great job brother!
Nice one, Jackson. That really got my cigar bone stoked!
Enjoyed your review!! Nicely done!!
Thanks for the encouragement brothers. I see a few points I can improve on (smoke output for one). I'll keep working on the technique and post notes/reviews as I can. I honestly feel like it heightens the smoking experience to take notes. It also takes a lot of concentration, and uninterrupted time (which I don't get a lot of with 3 kids). Again, let me know if you have any constructive criticism I can apply to the next one.

Only constructive criticism I have is don't be so humble, and don't worry so much about what we think of what you thought! :D Smoke, write your thoughts, post, and know that we appreciate the review regardless of how eloquent, or experienced you may or may not be. This review was great, by the way.

I know exactly what you mean about notes heightening the experience. I don't actually like taking notes (I find taking the time to write down thoughts, or type them, takes away from the pure pleasure of the experience) but the practice of taking the time to really concentrate on the flavors can turn a decent experience into a great one just due to taking the time.

I can also relate to the kids thing.. I have five :D

Finally got around to smoking my 2015 LC52. My palate isn't that refined but I got mostly cream with a little bit of sweetness and leather/earth mixed in. Also it was super smooth both on the draw and retro. Overall the flavor was enjoyable but I did have some issues with it. Seemed like every time the ash fell off it went out on me which required three delights which was annoying. Then I noticed what appeared to be tunneling. This is the first time I've noticed this in a cigar so maybe you all can confirm for me.

This one has been in my humid for about a week at 67/67 but essentially its ROTT. I'll be letting the other 4 sit for a while before I revisit.

I've gone through about 10 Las Calaveras in the three different sizes with just minor touch ups but no tunneling. Other than making sure you are lighting correctly, there is not much that can be unfortunately done to prevent this. Hopefully, just an isolated construction issue ruining a phenomenal stick.

I agree with this, both of the ones I've smoked put on a show in the burn category. They were absolutely perfect. Actually, I would rate the burn higher than any of the other characteristics typically judged.
