Have any of you have any experience with layering pipe tobacco, i.e. packing your pipe with more than one blend?
I've tried this recently. There's always the mottle that stays in the pipe on account of the hole not being at the bottom at the bowl, and also I find that towards the end of the bowl, the tobacco starts smoking bitter no matter how many times I ream a pipecleaner down the stem, so in the end, a part of the tobacco goes unsmoked. I figured, instead of throwing away the premium stuff (Dunhill 965), I'd use some cheaper tobacco for that role.
I packed my pipe with the three-fill method (fill each time to the top, then press down with the hand of the child, hand of the woman and hand of the man), using Clan Aromatic for the first fill and Dunhill 965 for the rest.
The tobacco didn't catch fire all the way around the bowl as it should, but instead only a small arrea burned and it qucikly burroughed a narrow hole rihgt into the Clan Aromatic. So, not the optimal experience.
My guess here is that if I'm going to be doing that, I should pack the Clan more firmly, then lay over the Dunhill (or whatever), as the Clan is not meant to be smoked anyhow.
