Long term storage in plastic humidor.

Hi,

It's been a while since I have been active on here as I haven't smoked on a regular for some time. I still have a small collection of sticks I would like to keep in good shape and I am having trouble with my cheap C.I. 25 stick box that was free. Well I recently ordered a plastic humidor box like the cigar caddy or the herd a dor and am wondering what the take is on for long term use, it will be equipped with 2 69% boveda packs and rarely opened. Should I add some cedar sheets to keep the traditional smell..

Suggestions, flaming, banning, any info would help...

Not sure about of travel humidor for long term but a good sealing tupperware container with a piece of Spanish cedar will work awesome. Just gotta open it every once in a while to get some air flow. Its just a really small scale coolidor.

I have an armor traveling humidor and only occasionally replace the trays. I keep one large Boveda pack in it. I absolutely love my travel case and have recommended it as a smaller storage option for others in the past. For humidification, I think a 2 way system like Boveda is absolutely necessary since the case has such a tight seal... there are probably experts out there that can add a lot more value to the thread.

As long as it keeps the humidity I don't see why it wouldn't work. It's really not any different than tupperware. I happen to really like the cedar aroma so would probably add some sheets of cedar somehow, but I don't think it's necessary. And Bovedas would definitely be the way to go.

Everything else seems to have been covered, but be careful about heat with one of those. Some of the cheaper plastic travel humidors use a lower grade plastic, which when it gets hot, and impart a plastic taste to your cigars, via fumes. If you bought a name brand one, such as Xikar, that's not a problem as they use a higher grade plastic, but if you bought the cheapest one, keep it in the A/C and you should be fine. If you take it in your car and leave it in there on a hot day though, you get a funky plastic taste on your cigars, no good.

So I received my 40ct cigar caddy and so far am happy but a little confused..

It seems to be getting up to humidity better than my other humidor and this is probably due to the two boveda packs. But I have a meager collection of about 30 sticks which means I filled up 3 trays and the 4th tray will not wen fit in the box, my sticks aren't big ring gage either. This is a small gripe as I have a plan to eliminate the trays.

Since I am more of an occasional smoker and these sticks might sit months without me fussing over them, my reasoning behind a cigar caddy was to have a very low maintenance yet reliable humidor not intended for travel. So I am thinking of ditching the foam and making or having made some cedar boards that will fully line the unit to make a more traditional style humidor as without the foam there is a ton of room in this thing.

Thoughts ideas?

I've got a 77 count traveller from the BOTL store, with the foam trays, probably pretty similar to what you have. I got it in December, and have kept it pretty much full the whole time, humidifying with two Boveda 65 packs. Humidity stays rock solid, and when I open it up it smells wonderful in there. I'm considering taking out the foam and putting some trays in there as well, so I can store a lot more smokes without the damage that could happen from just storing them loose. I might be a bit concerned about plastic odor if I was going to be subjecting it to serious heat over a period of time, but I've had mine full since December and none of my smokes have picked up any foul taste from either the foam or plastic. In fact, if anything, the foam has picked up a nice cigar essence!

If you plan to ditch the foam, you could always use some of the 5 finger cigar bags to help protect your cigars. I do that in my 30 count, and in my vinotemp. Since the wine cooler is stored in our RV, and is subject to violent roads-I wanted some protection for the sticks. I put everything in the 5 finger bags, and they stack so that you hardly lose any space at all. I'm not saying it's the best way in the world to protect your sticks-but I have a LOT more space than I did with the foam, and I haven't seen any damage yet. Also, as a plus, a quality bag will hold the humidity in, giving you double protection on your RH numbers. I also like how I can reach in and grab a 5er for a road trip, and know the humidity is set in there, without having to worry about getting another small case out for the sticks.

Yeah I am thinking either cedar lined or custom cedar trays to fit in the case would be nice. Since this will mostly be sitting in one location .
