Looking for a new Laptop

Im going to be doing some shoping and I am looking for suggestions on a new laptop. price range = $500 - $1,000

Depends on what you want it for.. if its just to surf the web etc I'd go with a netbook, if you want it to surf the web and word processing go with the new MacBook. If you like watching movies etc on your laptop and would prefer a larger screen I'd go with a Sony don't know how good the IBM machines are since Lenovo took over but the new Sony's are solid.

What exactlly will you be using it for is a good place to start. Is it just for internet use, or will you be gaming with it, editing video/pictures. ect....

I picked up the deal Verizon Wireless has on the HP netbook. $200 for a laptop with 80gb hard drive with a built in air card. YOU have to have an external Disc Drive though. So far, works for my needs. Internet, report writing, etc.

What are you going to use your laptop for? Do you require it for gaming, CAD, etc?

Go Dell, Get the best thing you can afford.... the gaming criteria is the expensive one for the laptop... it's not an ideal mix of options, but you can get something usable for usre.
if you don't like dell... hp has sweet monitors.
Sony will be to expensive and I hate the brand.
Apple is an evil brand as well.
I would say go NETBOOK if you didn't have the gaming criteria.

DUDE! You can get the new 13" MacBook Pro for just $1099 and it comes with a FREE iPod Touch and a FREE printer! This is the top-o-the-line PRO model, not the standard MacBook model.

This sucker has a 7-hour battery life (I have the 17" model and that's not a false claim by Apple, this battery really does last forever!). The screen is amazing, it has a dedicated graphics card (gaming!), and best of all you get the Mac Operating System which is so much better and easier to use than Windows that it's absolutely laughable (but you can always install Windows on a Mac if you really want to, and then have both!).

There are really two things that make that a low-end laptop:

#1 - the Pentium processor (that's bottom of the barrel right there)
#2 - the Intel GMA video (that's below bottom of the barrel)

Personally, I wouldn't buy a Pentium or Celeron based laptop--I would absolutely-positively require something out of the Intel Core product line instead.

Also, as far as the video goes, I wouldn't touch the Intel GMA video card with a 10-foot pole. It's garbage, complete garbage. Unaccelerated video with shared memory = piss poor performance at everything including graphics work, games, video, heavy website use, and for that matter will even be sluggish in the operating system itself. The GMA was a "servicable-at-best" product about 3 years ago. Nowadays, it's hard to believe it's still offered in anything but a netbook.

Essentially, the computer you're looking at isn't much better than a netbook. Short of the extra memory and larger screen, and of course several extra pounds of weight, it's going to perform much like a netbook. FWIW I've got an HP mini netbook, and it's truly awesome specifically because it's so portable--but it's a secondary computer. There's no way I could live with it as a primary computer. The laptop you're looking at basicaly gives the performance of a netbook but without the size/weight advantage.

Which is to say, it's slow AND heavy.

Same here, but I was really in the 5-700 mareket, 1000+ is a little too expensive right now and things like free printers and ipods do not appeal to me in the least.
