Well my S T Dupont X-Tend is no longer working and I'm in search for a new lighter. I have a couple in mind, but I think I'm leaning towards the Bugatti 1 Lighter. It is a sweet looking lighter and I've been eyeing if for a while. I'm also looking at some of the Porsche Lighters (PD6 or the PD3) or just getting another X-Tend. Anyways, has anyone owned either the Bugatti or Porsche Lighters before? I know that a few of you have the X-Tend. I loved that lighter, but I think I want something different.

If you want to check out the ones I'm looking at here is a link:

Whether under warranty or not, it might be worth finding out how much Dupont would charge to repair or replace...

I have a few older Dupont lighters (L1 and L2) that have served me well over the years. I do like the soft flame and the flint ignition is very reliable but the seals do wear out. I thought the Xtend were interesting but I have never owned one. I have my uncles and my grandfather's Dunhill Rollagas lighters (from the 60's and 70's) and they are extremely reliable flint and butane lighters; however, they are also soft flame lighters. I haven't had much luck with torch lighters and the piezo electric ignition. I have a Porsche Design PD5 and it thin and light in the pocket but after a few years it lit erratically. It is a neat gadget with the sockets and it looks cool when you open it up but the design needs work in my opinion. If you can use a soft flame, I would look into a vintage Dunhill Rollagas. If you need a torch, I think the cheap Ronsons are the best value.

I have the Xikar Genesis and really like it. It is reliable so far, although if I do not empty it out completely before filling the pressure is a little off and the flame grows hot and cold. Only thing I would change would be to get a traditional flame, instead of a jet like torch flame lighter.

Let's face it: If you are looking at Duponts and Porsches, you're not going to be interested in Blazers or Ronsons. I understand wanting a change of pace from the X-tend, but they are the most dependable lighter I have ever used. Mike's has them for about half price (in only the blue color IIRC)...

RE Big Frank's comments concerning soft flame lighters - I just bought my first (the rest are torches) and I love it. It seems to heat the end of the smoke to an ember more slowly and with less char than a torch resulting in a cooler and truer tasting smoke from the start. That may just be a subconscious attempt to justify its purchase...

Mine (below) is from the atoll line but there is also an IM corona "old boy" that is similar in form and cost.
