  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I too enjoy a little shine every now and then, mostly over the holidays though when I can enjoy it with friends and family.
I do have a question: Does moonshine go bad? I have 4 clear non flavored qt jars in my refrigerator that have been there for at least two years, maybe a little more. Two of the jars have been opened, the other two are untouched. I ask because the holidays are upon us and I do not want to have to worry about vision problems, or people getting sick over a shot or two, all because of some bad moonshine. Can you tell by sight or by smell if moonshine has gone bad?
Thank you for your time,
Mike
Depending on how high of a proof it is shine has just as much a chance of going bad as 80proof rum or vodka. Which really isn't a chance.

Going blind isn't because the moonshine went bad. That happens when drinking methanol (fermentation builds both methanol and ethanol). In beers, wines,...it is too small a percentage to worry, thus they never "take it out". But having a lower boiling point, ye get most of it in the first bottles when distilling. THAT makes ye blind/kills ye. Thus ye throw it away. Perfect time to notice this is a mellow vodka hangover...compared to a horrid wine hangover.

I live in NC, and have had my fair share of Mr Johnson's FINE shine!! I put it right up there with the shine I use to drink while going to college in Tn from '86-'90. Man Jr makes a nice batch!!

anybody ever make some?
I can help anyone who wants to make some

1st you need a Copper Moonshine Still available here:
http://www.coppermoonshinestills.com/

There are also plenty of great mash recipes on that site.

I have had lots of the stuff.

If you are ever up for an experience spend a weekend at this music festival. You'll sample more moonshine than you should of. Plan on not driving home and rent a campsite. It is an all nighter in the woods.

The Moonshiners Reunion Music Festival

I am not kidding, these guys are the real Beverly Hillbillies

This is the guy who runs it. His name is Barney Barnwell. His family is one of the oldest bootlegging families in South Carolina. He is a great guy. I had a amazine time.

Oh Barney had a baby deer that followed him around like a dog where ever he went. I used to have pictures of the deer but I think I deleted them.

Special thanks to the Marines with The Muscadine Shine. It was my favorite!!!
