  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So I inherited a boat load of my Dad's pipes when he passed away about 25 years ago, probably about 50 or so. He was quite the Piper and only smoked Prince Albert. A bunch of Dr Grabow and Kaywoodies, but a bunch I'm not familiar with.

With the cold weather coming on, I think it's time I take the plunge into the Pipe world. I've been following the threads and it looks like something I'll enjoy. I'm going to start working on the Dr G's and Kaywoodies for practice.

From what I've read here and else where, I'll start by reaming/scraping the bowls (some hVe huge cakes), clean the shanks thoroughly with Grain Alcohol and pipe cleans, then do a salt/alcohol treatment. The stems will get a OxyClean bath, alcohol cleaning, and thorough sanding and buffing. I'll finish up with a few coats of carnauba wax. I'm not looking to make them look new. I like the old patina some oxidation can give.

Here's what I've started this week:
The buffer will make this much easier!

Here's a few I started cleaning up and shining

And or course I had to get some baccy to test them with! I've read about these and they sound pretty tasty and in my wheel house. I'll probably stream clear of aromatics

Sorry for the long post, but I'll add more as I get more proficient

A couple more cleaned up and smoking nicely. Not really sure what they are, this first one says Osborn and also JEM

And this one from The Owl Shop in New Haven. I may bring this one with me next time I'm there and show it to the manager, it's got to be at least 50 years old
