  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So I bought my first estate pipe the other day on eBay. I paid $55 for it from, what I think is, a reputable seller. I have no idea if that's overpaying but I liked it. It's a Danish Sovereign which, from what I understand, is a Stanwell second. To me it looks like it's in beautiful condition. I tried to look up the number on the side but I couldn't find much. I also have no idea what the XXX means on the mouthpiece. With that being said, is anyone able to give me their thoughts on it and maybe provide a little more info? Since this is my first estate I don't know what the next step is as far as cleaning/sanitizing etc. The seller simply said it is "In excellent condition with a crisp sanitized stem is stamped with the XXX."

Any thoughts/criticism is appreciated! I bought another one that I will be posting up in this thread when I receive it.

On to the pictures...

i don't dig freehands, by and large, but that is the second i have seen in twelve hours that i dig. well done.

as for your "deal", only you can call that one. to me, it looks like you have hardly ANY work to do to make it smokeable (HAS it been smoked?). max, half a pack of cleaners and some alcohol, maybe not even a salt/alcohol treatment, is all you need to get her up. if you like the styling, i say you did fairly well.

hope she smokes great for you! o)

Thank you for the kind words! I'm pretty sure there's not a whole lot of work to be done. I'll probably do a salt/alcohol treatment just to be safe. As far as it being smoked, it certainly smells like it but I don't think too many times. My only qualm about it is the mouthpiece pulls out rather easy. I'm not sure if that's a big deal or not. It doesn't wiggle around at all just comes comes out with very little effort.

One of the estate pipes I just restored was a Dr Grabow I bought off of Ebay for $7. Same thing - it has slightly loose stem. But it smokes fine and I don't have any concerns that it may slip out during use. As long as it feels secure while smoking, I doubt it would be a problem.

Distilled water on a qtip, swab the wood where the stem goes in (dunno the proper term) Let it sit, dry for a day and retest the fit. Repeat if needed. The fit loosens when the stem is removed while pipe is warm (and wet) which compresses the briar wood ever so slightly, but just enough to loosen the fit. Get it wet and cool, let it swell and dry, and it should fit again.

Nice pipe. Use beeswax on the tenon. That will tighten it up. Then smoking it over time will tighten it.

This is my second purchase. I love this one but it's gonna be a lot of work. I was thinking about sending it somewhere to clean up and restore a little bit but I'm gonna try my hand at it. I'm just gonna clean it for now and go from there. I don't have a buffing wheel so that'll be an issue later on. Anyway, it's a Stanwell 619 and I don't know any other specifics about it. Thoughts?

Ha! Knowing Dave, I wouldn't worry about him keeping a pipe… I'd be more concerned about what he would send back along with it!

Ha ha. I know, I'm just flipping him some crap because we (Ryan and I) had talked about sending him Estates and he joked that he would have to keep them. All in good fun.

I am really digging the Stanwell and know Dave would do a killer job bringing it back. I too would be leary of the offer though knowing how he likes to smack people around, lol. That being said, jump on that offer!!!

Thanks! And trust me, I did. I'm sure he'll make it look a hell of a lot better than I ever could!
