So, I did show this in another thread here, I believe it was under "show us your storage" in the pipes section but I didn't want to derail that thread more than I already did. A lot of you were extremely interested in hearing about this piece and how I got a hold of it. So here's the (not so) little story behind this one....
This past weekend, I was spending time with my girlfriend and I was telling her how I could use a nice pipe rack for my pipes and accessories. I told her in our travels over the weekend I'd like to stop at a few yard sales since out by her, it's literally like American Pickers, with some unique items and sometimes extremely cheap, depending on where you see the sales. This guy was located on a back road, in the middle of a farm. He actually had a barn full of antiques that looked like a shop, but he didn't have the barn shop open sadly when we were there. He was just selling what he had outside on the lawn. I'd expect in the next few weeks he'll open it up though as the east end of Long Island is a big tourist area for the vineyards and festivals.
So anyway, back to the rack....I saw this gem right from the road as I got out of my truck. My eyes lit up like lightbulbs as I literally powerwalked to get my hands on this before someone else saw it. I said to her, "holy sh*t it's a pipe rack, I have to have this piece, it's as simple as that." I saw the price tag of $10.00 and was just to excited that I didn't even try to negotiate with the guy although I should've. I'm sure he might've came down a few bucks possibly like 2 or 3 but I thought the $10.00 was worth it anyway. I can't find ANYTHING nor have I seen anything like this anywhere else. It was unique. Plus it's condition was like it was never used. But if it was, who ever had this piece before me took extremely good care of it. The backing has some sort of paper or cardboard which is peeling off a little bit, but maybe a nail (...cringing...) or some glue can make that a quick fix.
It also came with what I thought was a tamper, but as some of you stated it could very well be a tax stamp??? I'll eventually get out to an antique store by my girlfriend's house and see who can maybe tell me more about it just like some of you did and get a price on it. Honestly, if it's not worth anything, I have a new tamper. But should it be worth something....it might just stay with the rack in storage.
Here's a few pictures of it when I purchased it over the weekend below:
