  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I have the opportunity to put on a cigar presentation for a high class uppity up suit and tie members only resturaunt. I know at least eight of the audience members have smoked cigars longer that I have so I want to go faily in depth so everyone walks away learning something(and so I don't look like an asshat infront of a bunch of people). I want to wow them with information they never knew before. I want to provide a maduro and a natural wrapper cigar for each to sample. For the maduro I was thinking Padron 0000, and the natural a DPG Cuban Classic. Heres some topics I thought of.

CIGAR CONSTRUCTION
STORAGE
HOW TO SMOKE A CIGAR
DEALS ONLINE
MUST TRY STICKS
WRAPPER

Any and all information will help tremendously. facts, topics, starting points, visual aid suggestions, anything will help. I REALLY don't like public speaking, but I do want to share the joy of this hobby with others. Thanks for your help guys.

I'm more than willing here, just separate the subjects better, since they're a tad confusing to read.

I say that is just to fill up. The most important is, first, tobacco andcigar history, types of tobacco, cigar anatomy, storage, how to (cut, light and smoke), etc. As a bonus ye canput certain tricks like c-bid, daily deals, coolers, etc.

Just be careful to not toss too much their way, information overload can kill a presentation quickly. These folks are going to be there to have fun, learn a little and talk about cigars. If your audience is truly high class uppity, I'd steer clear of CBid and a lot of other cigar "deal" sites. These guys don't mind spending top dollar for top dollar smokes. Consider your audience. Like Moro said as well, clear up your topics, get in the habit of making a concise outline, use spell check, you have no less than ten words misspelled in your original post. Now I'm not knocking you, but those are things that those "high class uppity" people will notice too, and then your cred goes right out the window.

Get a roller, to show up![/QUOTE]

Wish I could, that would be cool. I have a feeling the budget wont be much over $200. I would be willing to pay a hot chick fifty bucks to hold up cigars and laugh at my stupid jokes though.

Can you smoke in the restraunt? how much time are you given? how many people are you expecting? Knowing this will help you determine how to structure your presentation.

But, my advice is give a handout with technical info and where to find more info if wanted so you are off the hook for lots of detail. Then focus on the human element of smoking and collecting cigars, if you have a group that loves wine, they can understand how a handful of plants in different regions can produce a endless variety of results. Like wine drinkers, some cigar smokers just want to find what they like and stick with it while others enjoy an endless journey. Be entertaining first and informative second, great cigar stories are endless, tell of Kenedy buying up Cuban Cigars before signing the embargo, Winston Churchill, Mark Twain and George Burns have great quotes to name a few. Cigars used to be handed out as prizes at fairs, shipped to soldiers at war, handed out with bands picturing presidential canidates, and marked great times like weddings and births. Don't tell them how to smoke a cigar, tell them why you love to. I'm sure if you asked this group for favorite cigar related bits you'd get lots of material quick. For me it's the guy who insured his cigars then went after the insuance company after the sticks all were burned up. If you don't know the punch line to that one, I'll try to dig it up for you, might be a nice ice breaker.

Mitch that is awsome- just what I was looking for. I forgot that the saying "close but no cigar" came from the sledge hammer and the bell thing at the fair. Entertaining first and informative second is the best single recommendation I could think of. The quote that a brother on this site made about cigars cutting George burns life short after 100 short years is golden!! "Cut him down in his prime" Thats good stuff. To answer your original questions- time is flexible, audience will most likely be less than thirty, and there is no smoking in the restaurant.

+1. Cater to both audiences. You said that you potentially have cigar smokers there, so don't bore them with an entire intro to cigar smoking. I would balance a great intro to cigar smoking with history.

Seems like you are well on your way, with a group that small you can easily get them involved with questions and still keep it on track, good luck- let us know how it works out.

Hello all! Unfortunately I can't help since I'm a newbie to the pleasures of the cigar world, but would love to read the article by Mitch. The sad part is that I can't find it. If anyone could send me the link, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
