  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Need info from cigar cabinet humidor owners...

I broke down and bought a basic cabinet unit, im tired of having 2 large desktop units and a large cooler...all full. I wanted 1 unit, that looked better and could hold more. It's a medium cabinet, 22"x18"x60".

Anyway, its being delivered in a few hours.

In the past I've "seasoned" humidors sometimes and other times just put my humidifiers and sticks in there right away, it seems the results where the same either way.

Basically I don't want to be patient and "season" the cabinet first, especially if in the past it hasn't made much difference.

The humidifiers i will be using is 1lb of heartfelt beads, 1 cigar oasis plus, and a small fan for extra air movement. (I may had a few glasses of water to begin as well.)

So have any of the cabinet owners skipped the Seasoning process and just loaded up their already humidified sticks and all there humidifiers and just run it?

Thanks....

I have heard that when using something powerful, like a Acumonitor, you can skip seasoning, but something that big, withh just a cigar oasis, I would thinkg you should season it. I would hate to see you put your entire collection in there to have it dry up for a few days. Maybe a bowl of hot distilled water so it will evaporate more quickly or a wipe down of the inside would speed it up. Also, I would thikg that on a 5 foot tall cabinet, you will want more than a CO in it. my .02

Not sure about CA, but over here in Colorado that is the worst move you can make. It will ruin your cigars and you'll end up seasoning your humi anyway after the cigars get dried out.
But in California maybe your relative humidity is high enough. I would at least let it sit for a day or two to be sure. I always season my humidors for about a week, but CO is notoriously dry.
Congrats on the new cabinet!

I seasoned both Cabinets before loading them up. Of course I live in the desert and didn't want a large fluctuation in the RH.

Is that really a chance you want to take? I don't mean this to sound like I'm gettin' on ya, but is a couple days, hell even a week worth taking that kind of chance?

I have a four canister Accumonitor in my cabinet and let it run for a week before I put cigars in there. Ron said it was fine much earlier, but it just wasn't worth the risk. Just think of the singles drawer, that's unseasoned wood, looking, searching, begging for moisture...then you put your singles in there right after it's unpacked and set into place.

I know what I'd do, let your conscience be your guide.

I think you bought my humidor. :smokingbo

Anyways, I left a bowl of water inside the humidor for about a week until my Accumonitor arrived. Then I installed that and put the cigars into about 1 or 2 days later. The bowl of water didn't do much and I couldn't get my humidity above 58%, but once the Accumonitor arrived it stays at around 64-69%.

Not sure if this helped, but I would let the beads and Oasis stay in the humidor for about 1 week until I put cigars in it. If you don't the I doubt it will hurt the cigars, but why chance it when you only have to wait a little longer.

I have an Avallo 2000 cabinet. I let the Accumonitor run for a couple of days until it settled in to the humidity I'd set it at. But then, it's a 4 canister/fan active system. I agree with the advice that's been offered above, season it. You can't be sure of the moisture level of the wood when it arrives, so I'd give it at least a week before I transfer the cigars. It's not like you don't have existing storage.

Actually I really appreciate the advice, I think my excitement was overtaking my knowledge.

Thanks for the replies, I think i'll wait a few days at least.

Still curious if anyone has loaded a un-seasoned cabinet.....?

When talking to Ron about my bosses new Avallo, he said with the accumonitro you could do it, but a day or two would be advised. If you really want you could just put the 2 desktops humis you have now in the cabinet and seasoniit from there.

I bought a Conni from cheaphumidors...it's about the size of a 1200. This was about a week ago or so, the humidity up here in MI is very low.

It only took me a day or so to really feel comfortable with loading it up. I put a full bowl of distilled water, 1 lb of beads soaked to the max, and 2 oust fans. It was about 20% when I started and about 65% after a day. I never noticed a problem after putting cigars in, and I was checking every hour.

That's just MY experience..I always recommend full discretion when loading a cabinet up with a large and valuable collection. I felt comfortable after a day, but if I seen any RH swing whatsoever I would have immediately halted operations.

Best of luck!

I have three Staebells and I seasoned each one for 24 hours.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Not worth the aggrivation to take a short cut and way to much invested as to what is going inside.

Ok, here's the update....

It arrive 2 hours ago, very exciting, it looks pretty cool.

Anyways, i put hydrometers right in it. At that point, fresh out of the box it was at 54.
After 2 hours of oasis running, and 2 glasses of water(top and bottom) it now reads 62.....hmmmm..............:smokingco
