Alright, we cut cable about a year ago and have the two above mentioned subscriptions in adition to Roku channels. My wife and I love documentaries and educational programing. Anything about sutainability, organic gardening/farming, homesteding and survivalism. We've hit a roadblock on programing and can't seem to find anything we want to watch lately without purchasing on Amazon. So, hit me with your recomendations. I would love to hear them.

Cheers

Good luck to you. You've hit some niches that aren't exactly in my wheelhouse. We have enjoyed anything Ken Burns...and fishing shows.
But, I wish you the best of luck because the search-ability of both those services blows.

PBS has a free Roku channel. Not sure about stuff on your interests specifically but there's some good stuff on there.

We did the exact same thing about two years ago and save over $1200 annually (after taxes)! I, too, love documentaries and Netflix is the king of that genre. They're not always listed in the suggested titles so you have to look for them.

Here are some of my favorites in no particular order. (that's not true, they're in the order that I remember them):
  • Jiro Loves Sushi
  • Exit Through the Gift Shop
  • Somm
  • Tiny
  • The Art of the Steal (haven't watched yet but is on my list)
  • Mind of a Chef (can't wait for season 3)
  • Ai WeiWei: Never Sorry
  • The Queen of Versailles
  • Encounters at the End of the World
  • Manakamana (haven't watched yet but is on my list)
  • Virunga
  • Radio Bikini
  • Pandora's Promise (haven't watched yet but is on my list)
  • Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead
  • A Year in Burgundy
  • Food, INC.
  • Three Stars
  • Bottle Shock (not a documentary but a great telling of the US winning a prestigious wine event in France)
  • Hey Bartender
  • Objectified (it's about industrial design)
  • Helvetica (I'm a typography nerd, so this was awesome to me)
  • Design is One
  • Going for Gold: The Bocuse d'Or
  • Inside Lego
  • After Porn
  • Red Obsession
  • This Film is Not Yet Rated (about the MPAA)

Also, if you like food documentaries, make sure you add the Chow Channel (free) and watch their series "Obsessives"

Never in a million years thought I would like it, but Downton Abbey is an excellent period drama on PBS. Great historical framework. Not exactly what you're looking for, but you might be surprised...

That is a problem with Netflix, i have a hard time "finding" something to watch without knowing what to search for. Thanks for the recomendations. I've seen a number of those but some look interesting as well. Check out Burt's Buzz and 180 South if you haven't seen them.

Reel Injun was a good one - about Hollywood's idiotic and sometimes unintentionally funny portrayal of Native Americans. Oh, and Trekkies too!
