  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Now I'm not talking about flavor infused but the characteristics themselves. OK so far I think I've got these flavors down:
Hay/grass, vanilla, earthy (dirt), black pepper and some kind of nut.

Leather, coffee, nutmeg and cedar have eluded me so I'm thinking if I were to concentrate in smoking a cigar that strongest in one of these traits until I can distinguish it then move on to the next trait on my list.

What I need from you experts are a list of cigars that are predominant in each of these "mystery to me" traits so I can begin my studies. :cbig:

Thanks

PS - The operative word in this post is "list" not samples, so no funny business!!

For cedar, I suggest an RyJ Cedros Deluxe #2. Great little stick, lots of cedar flavor.

The most "leather" flavor I ever experienced was with a Man O' War.

I'm on the same boat as you... I read reviews of cigars, and I see all the flavors I've missed... Then I try to find them in cigars that are richer in those flavors... It's fun, but sometimes sucks.

You can get a lot of woodsy and leathery flavors from Pepin Blue Labels.

Pepin blue is a pepper-bomb! For a leather-bomb try Nestor Miranda Special Selection.

Had a LADC LE this morning that was very 'coffee & cedar'...

For a good leather taste I'd recommend an Illusion. Great full smoke with good touch leather.

Theproblem with nutmeg is that it is an undernote; or at least I've yet tofind a cigar with predominantly nutmeg. Get maduros for coffee; they usually have it. Leather? Illusione is good, as Joe said, and they are an excelent cigar overall.

I've been smoking cigars for a long, long time and still can't pick out the "flavors" -- except for hay/grass which I generally don't like. Maybe if I read the reviews first and then tried to identify the tastes I read about.

I don't find Blue Labels to be that peppery to tell you the truth.

To me, all cigars taste like... smoke from burning tobacco! Call me crazy. :headroll: Seriously, I rarely detect any of those distinct flavors. I get, depending on the cigar, sweetness, sourness, irritation (what I think others call pepper) and that's about it. On really rare occasions, I can get a hint of a sort of coffee-cocolate-mocha aroma, but that's really unusual. Guess I just have a fairly insensitive sense of smell and palate, since I've been smoking cigars for decades. :ccowboy:

I've been smokin for 4 plus decades and can get most of the subtle flavors only by exhaling through the nose. The everyday stuff, leather, earth, floral, Chocolate etc, I get just by puffing and exhaling.

I have never gotten amaretto, boysenberry, truffles, white chocolate, subtle nuances of lifeboy or WD40.......ever.
On occassion I have gotten the dreaded Hobo's Ass.

Its funny this topic came up. its amazing, to me at least, when one grows up and dabbles in spirits and cigars, all of a sudden "leather", "peat" and general earthy flavors all of a sudden are supposed to be appealing! I guess its just me, if you tell me something tastes like leather, my mouth just does not water! but i do like me a spicey peppery cigar!!

and so to not make this a wasted post, i smoked a Hoya De Monterray excaiber and i got strong chocolate notes when i drew on it before i lit it. great smoke..

In addition to cigars I also enjoy wine, and this issue comes up all the time, especially on the message boards. I am much better at identifying the flavors of cigars than wine, but for the most part I group things in terms of "just okay, pretty good, really good, excellent, and holy $%&^* that was !&*@(# awesome." One time this person on a wine message board identified a flavor as "wet pebbles." :wtf:

I don't really frequent the wine boards anymore.
