N.H. Bans Smoking In Bars And Restaurants
(AP) CONCORD, N.H. Ninety days from today, it will be illegal to smoke in New Hampshire bars and restaurants.

Governor John Lynch signed the smoking ban into law this morning, making New Hampshire the final New England state to have such a ban. It takes effect in 90 days.

Supporters say the ban is needed to protect workers and customers from second-hand smoke.

Opponents maintain the state should educate the public about the dangers of smoking and second-hand smoke instead of banning smoking. They also say restaurant and bar owners -- not the state -- should decide when or if to ban smoking.

:argh:

Thank you for saving us from ourselves yet again, Nanny State. How I detest the secondhand smoke refrain. EVERYBODY knows that smoking (and inhaling) is BAD BAD BAD, but the whole secondhand smoke thing is hogwash based on bad science.

We've known about the adverse effects of cigarette smoking for half a century, yet prior to the onset of government bans you could not find a smoke-free bar or restaurant ANYWHERE. Poor waitresses were dropping dead left and right from secondhand smoke and the owners did NOTHING to protect them.

Why is that? You'd think that someone somewhere would've been proactive and banned smoking in his own establishment of his own volition. But that never happened. Was it because they were afraid of losing business? Maybe. Or was it because the whole idea that secondhand smoke causing serious long term effects was so ludicrous that nobody ever even entertained the idea?

There are already towns attempting, to varying degrees, to ban smoking in all public areas including open air spaces such as parks. Apparently secondhand smoke is dangerous to little tweety birds and froggies, too.

Bangor, ME banned smoking in your own car if a child is present. Thank god, somebody's thinking of the children. They need to ban Happy Meals and American Idol next.
